Wow, what a busy two weeks we have had with our years 3-5 students involvement with the the annual Swimming & Water Safety program at Hagley! It's been wonderful to see how well the children (and staff) have coped with this alongside of still getting on with their learning before and after swimming. Well done to all involved!
The year is certianly flying by, and with this comes lots of excitement and some nervousness about what the new school year will bring. We are working hard to maintain a productive and orderly learning enviroment by continuing with the everyday regularity of learning programs and emotional regulation support. We greatly appreciate the continued support of our families supporting children to be organised, well rested and positive about school.
2021
We are now in a position to share the class structure for 2021. Class placements will go home with end of year reports on Friday December 12th.
The make up of classes is mainly determined by our numbers and our allocation of teaching staff.
Kindergarten A | Kindergarten B | Kindergarten C |
Prep A | Prep B | Prep-1 |
Gr 1 A | Gr 1-2 A | Gr 1-2 B |
Gr 2 A | Gr 2 B | |
Gr 3 A | Gr 3-4 A | Gr 3-4 B |
Gr 3-4 C | Gr 4-5 A | |
Gr 5-6 A | Gr 5-6 B | Gr 5-6 C |
Gr 5-6 D | Gr 5-6 E |
Hopefully I wil be able to share the allocated teacher for each class next newsletter... just a couple of small things to sort out first! And reminder that with several staff transferring we will be welcoming several new faces.
ROAD SAFETY
I'm sure by now that most of our school community are aware that the traffic situation for pick up at the lefthand side of the road closest to the roundabout has changed. This is no longer an area where cars can be parked (even if you are in the car). It is designed to keep pick up in this area flowing and therefore create continuous spaces. We are asking children to wait at the top end of the pick up and not near the carpark driveway as this is not safe. If you utilise this space, please keep moving to the top end as the cars in front of you move on. It will be very helpful if families can support students with this organisation.
We understand that pickup time for over 500 students can be frustrating, but it's important that all adults take some responsibility to keep our kids safe.

As an addition to our student achievement recognition we have introduced Aussie of the Month. Each month staff are given the opportunity to nominate students who demonstrate high-level citizenship. Congratulations to Quinton (2-3 Youdale) and Rahni (6D). November recipients will be announced during the 1st week of December.

We believe strongly in an inquiry based approach to learning. One of the most natural forms of inquiry occurs through play. Babies begin simple forms of play from a very early age and we continue to play, in some form, throughout our life. Play can be imaginative, creative, structured, solitary or cooperative. When children play they are deeply involved in their learning. An inquiry based approach to learning involves children researching, collaborating, thinking and communicating - skills which are fostered through a rich play experience. Here are some photos of play and inquiry across our school throughout the year. We hope to provide some information sessions regarding our inquiry based approach and the importance of play throughout next year.

Recently recognised employees of the department include Caroline Gale (Prep teacher) and Helen Birch (Administration clerk). While they recently received a 25 year gift of recognition from the department, we have given them key questions and asked them to share their responses.
Caroline Gale (Prep teacher):
What school other than Norwood do you have a great fondness for?
Deloraine Primary was the first school I taught at in the North of the state in 2007. I loved it there and made many lifelong friendships with staff, students and parents.
How many years have you worked part-time?
I worked part time- 4 days a week for many years in Hobart and really only began full time in 2007 when I came up to the north of the state.
How has teaching changed for you over your career?
Teaching has changed a lot over the past 25 years…..more Professional Learning, more complex planning , accountability and the one I love - collaborative planning.
Describe Norwood and its children in 3 words:
happy, friendly, dedicated.
Helen Birch ( Administration clerk)
What has been the biggest change in your role over time?
Introduction of Edupoint system
Name 2 or 3 teachers whose ability you have had great respect for over your time here?
Roslyn Faulkner, Alison Taylor & Jane Partridge-Tate
What change would you most like to see to support student learners?
More times for older students to support younger learners, as children respond differently to children than adults.
Are children different to 15-20 years ago? And if so, how?
Children are more independant in some ways and due to social media are aware of and concerned about global events.
A fun weekend with points scored, fouls made, big wins, big losses and smiles all around. All teams played with passion and great sportsmanship.
Some highlights:
Grade 5/6 Div 2 girls taking on Mrs Richards’ (foreign) team successfully
Grade 5/6 Div 2 boys making the cross overs in first place.
Grade 5/6 Div 3 boys coming second in their pool
Grade 5/6 Div 3 girls all becoming confident basketballers during the tournament.
Grade 3/4 Div 1 boys making the grand final and qualifying for the state championships.
Our 3/4 Div 3 boys coming out with 2 wins in their cross over games with multiple goal scorers.
Our 3/4 Div 2 girls win in the first game and great improvements in skills over the tournament.
We wish our Grade 3/4 boys all the best for the State tournament, held in Launceston on the weekend of the 5th and 6th December.
There are many volunteers that make this tournament happen for our children.
A very big thank you to:
Our Coaches – Phil Payne, David Milne, Andrew McPhan and Caleb Nason, Rick Wyllie, Corinne Leale and James Russell.
Parents – for taking on bench duties and running children around, and supporting their responses to wins and losses
Students – for their conduct over the weekend which made Norwood Primary proud.
Gary Jones and Corinne Leale
The Hagley Pool adventure for the 2020 program has proved to be a successful experience for our students. We are quite enjoying the pool environment and Mr Humphrey is finding it a good teaching space at this time of year. We have unfortunately lost a day in the program due to filtration issues but the skill development and water safety messages are clear to see in all participants. The program concludes this Friday.

Here are some of our littlest learners and their parents enjoying ‘Gumnuts.’ This week we have been talking about treasure baskets and why babies love playing with them and the types of things we can put in them.
Come and join us if you have a young baby every Tuesday 12-12:45pm in the Breezeway.
Grade 6 Presentation Evening
To be held at Queechy High School commencing at 7:00 pm on Wednesday December 2nd. Students will need to meet with their teachers at 6:45pm, prior to entering the Queechy gym. This event is a restricted event with only 2 people per family allowed to attend, this is not about seats this is about the number of people and includes babies and younger siblings.
All people attending the presentation evening will need to complete a COVID Visitor Health Screen prior to entering the gym, if you have more than one person attending you only need to complete one form but list both names on the form. We do not require families to fill in the RWVP section of the form. To ensure the process runs smoothly we ask that you fill your form in before you arrive and hand to the staff member at the door. Forms are available at the front office. We are grateful to QHS for their support of this event.

Payments can be made either in person at the school office or over the phone via card, EFTPOS/Card is the preferred method of payment. Payments need to be made no later than Friday 11th December. If you need a payment plan, the school is able to discuss this – please ask to speak to Nicole.
High School Orientation Day
Wednesday November 25th will see students heading to a government high school, for grade 7 in 2021, attending their respective high schools. It is expected that they go directly to the high school, and that they will spend a FULL day there, working in the initial class groupings that have been created for 2021.
Kings Meadows students received a note regarding this on 15/11, and the QHS letter was shared yesterday.

The School Association are starting to look ahead to 2021/2022. At our AGM in March all Executive positions will be vacant, these include Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer.
We would love people to start thinking about if this is something that interests them and we would welcome any new faces to these positions.
We currently hold our meetings on a Tuesday night, but this could be changed to a day meeting if that would suit the new executive and potential new members better, anything is possible!
If you have any further questions regarding these positions or our meetings please contact us on norwoodpsa@gmail.com or via our FB page.
