It has been great to see our new school uniform items being worn by students. We think they look fantastic!
Uniform Policy
Last night the School Association ratified the new School Dress Code and Uniform Policy. The key changes to the policy are:
- The uniform items have been consolidated to one uniform that every student can wear everyday - there is no longer a separate PE Uniform
- The Everyday Uniform is
- Navy trackpants, shorts or skort
- Green polo top (new)
- Green rugby jumper
- Green half zip jumper
- Navy polar fleece jumper
- Navy soft shell jacket
- Navy or white socks
- Navy hat
- Navy beanie (May - end of August)
- Black or navy shoes are preferred - shoes must be enclosed
OPTIONAL ITEMS
- Summer and winter dresses
We have also updated the Dress Code (requirements for how students should present themselves when attending or representing their school), as well as specifying clothing, a dress code may include personal presentation and appearance.
The following requirements apply in relation to:
- Jewellery - students wearing unacceptable jewellery will be asked to remove it, it will be stored in the office until the end of the day when the student or parent can collect it
- students are only permitted to wear studs or small sleepers
- students are permitted to wear watches
- students are not permitted to wear necklaces or bracelets - Medical Alert necklaces and/or bracelets ARE permitted
- Make-up - is not acceptable and should not be worn to school
- Footwear - closed toe at all times
- Fingernails should be kept a safe length and nail polish should not be worn
- Puffer jackets (in conjunction with jumpers) can be worn to and from school and during break times but must not be worn in class
- Leggings are not permitted as a pant/trouser option they may only be worn under the school dress/tunic/skirt - navy only - other colours not permitted at any time
If you have any questions about specific uniform items Midford are able to advise.
We have had some good news from the Launceston City Council in response to our request for support with changes to the traffic and parking around the school.
A representative from the Council has visited and they have agreed to extend the drop off zone at the front of the school, this zone will be strictly no parking during pick up and drop off times and we hope that it will improve the flow of traffic around the school, it is expected this will be implemented within the next 6 weeks. More information on how the Drop Off Zone will operate to be provided in our next newsletter. The Council with support from State Growth have also agreed to extend the 40 kmh School Zone past the Opossum Road/Boiton Hill Road roundabout on all three approaches. As new signage needs to be installed we do not have a timeframe as yet.
A reminder to all of our families to use the School Crossing when crossing the road to and from school, and to drive at 40kmh to keep our children safe.

So much excitement and fun happened the day the snow came to Norwood. Such a delight to be able to share this fairly unique experience with our children. Yes there were cold, wet children but the joy, fun and wonderment was worth every bit of it.

Grade 2-6 students will participate in an on-line virtual presentation/assembly this Thursday afternoon. We are unable to have the performers visit but the messages of growth mindset, Never give up, Encourage others and Do your best (NED) are important for focussed learners. Taking risks and making mistakes are opportunites for learning, and practice and refinement are essential. The yo-yo is a vehicle for the NED message and sales will occur in the Library before school - commencing this Friday 14th August until Wednesday 19th August (cash only). All grade 2-6 students have received a flyer with information (see flyer below).
The NED Show visited the school, on-site, in 2016, and we are willing to have them on the big screen this year again. There is certainly NO obligation to buy a yo-yo.

The process of best preparing for high school has begun. Yesterday 30 students visited Queechy High to participate in a STEM challenge. We mixed with Punchbowl, Glen Dhu, Youngtown and Waverley Primary students as well as grade 9 leaders for this visit.
Kings Meadows High will have their 'Challenge Day' on Thursday September 3rd. Students from Punchbowl, Youngtown, Glen Dhu and Norwood will be present on this day. Typically this event has been held in term 2, but not this year. On Thursday September 7th, a Parent Information Evening (5:30pm via Teams) will discuss course selection for 2021 among other things.
All families should have indicated to a high school their intention to enrol.

The LSSSA have worked hard to enable inter-school sport to commence. There are many compliance tasks required and it is fantastic to see our students have purpose for exercise in a friendly, competitive environment. Also pleasing to see teamwork and skills evolve.
Thanks to Mr Ben Humphrey and the 5/6 teachers (Mr Driessen, Mr Walker, Mr Jones, Ms Marshall, Mrs Richards and Mrs Faulkner) for enabling this Friday afternoon activity.

Cross Country
The LSSSA have announced that a modified Cross Country Carnival will proceed between schools on Tuesday September 15th. Therefore a school day will be required to have our students demonstrate their endurance and running skills (without spectators). The grade 3-6 school carnival date is Wednesday September 2nd. Grade K -2 TBA. More details soon.
To our athletes and our distance runners - get training as there are opportunites in 2020 to represent your school!!
Every second year this personal development program is conducted here at Norwood. Wendy will finish her delivery this Friday. Congratulations Wendy on the sensitive and caring nature of your sessions, where you have constantly promoted health, respect and well being, around this sensitive topic. We trust that families have been prompted to open up the dialogue in this area if they hadn't already done so.

Recently in assembly Constable Annabel Shegog visited our school to teach us how to stay safe online. She explained how social media apps can be dangerous and how important it is to keep your personal data private online.
Her first tip was on how to make a good password and keep it safe. She explained how having a “pass phrase” can be used to keep your important accounts safe. A pass phrase is a set of words or numbers that you can easily remember but isn’t obvious to others. Another point she made about this was to frequently change it from year to year. It is also good if your password is eight or more characters long.
At the age of 10-13 cyber safety becomes more important. At 13 many social media apps start allowing you to make accounts without lying about your age. When making accounts you have to think carefully about passwords, profile pictures and ‘friends’ online. Whilst some might be real people, many are stealing online identities or lying about who they really are. Never post your address, school, family names, photos of yourself or others, or embarrassing content.
Annabel also stated that you need to think before you comment or post. Is it kind? Will it effect their happiness? Also, ask yourself these questions before you post. Would you show your grandma this comment/reply? Would you like to receive this comment? Would you be proud to show others this content?
So please take these things into consideration whilst being online, and stay safe.

It is so wonderful to have Launching Into Learning sessions now up and running once again.
We are now offering Toddler Time which is on Mondays in the hall from 9:15am - 10am. If you have an 18 month old to a 3 year old child we would love for you to join us.
Forest Fun is also being run on a Monday 1:40pm - 2:40 pm. Meet us at the Kinder building before we head up to the forest for nature play. Remember to wear warm clothing and your gumboots. This coming Monday we are making ‘bug hotels’ so bring along some recyclables from home- milk bottles, cylinders, tin cans, shoe boxes etc.
We also have a few spaces left in our Chatterbox group. This group is for 3 year olds and takes place in the Breezeway (little space between the 2 kinder classrooms) every Tuesday mornings from 9:00am -10:00am. Please RSVP to the office if you would like to come along to this session.
Here are some photos of our last Forest Fun session. We enjoyed playing hide and seek in the forest and using some gardening tools and learning words such as trowel, shovel and rake.
We hope to see you at one of our sessions soon.

The Lost Property basket is overflowing with un-named items. eg. jumpers, coats. Please check to see if anything belongs to you. It is always a good idea to NAME your child's clothing, especially now that we are starting to see lots of our new uniform items on students.
CAN YOU HELP?
Our School Canteen is in need of more volunteers on a Thursday or Friday. Please let the School Office know if you are available to help. Thank you!
Camps Tasmania are running an Arts Camp this October for youth aged 10-15 y/o. Empowering young people to accept challenges, think for themselves, form friendships and develop skills in a welcoming, supportive and safe environment.
