Community News
What a busy beginning of term we have had with lots of things happening alongside of classroom programs. Aaron Parry from Tasmanian Fire Service will conclude two weeks of fire safety across all grades at the end of this week. Hopefully children have shared some of their fire safety learning at home.
Last Friday, August 4th, we celebrated National Aboriginal Children’s Day. Cecillia and Camilla - Aboriginal Early Years Education Workers - organised a wonderful day of celebration around the theme ‘We play. We learn. We Belong’. Our school community celebrated with a wide-range of activities that shared and acknowledged the rich history of the Traditional Owners of our land. A huge thanks from Norwood Primary to Cecillia and Camilla for making the day possible.
See our Facebook page for many more photos.
School Uniform
Recently we have seen an increasing number of students wearing a range of non-uniform jumpers. Our school uniform policy outlines the acceptable jumpers for Norwood PS.
With the change of ownership of Targetts School Wear (supplier of our uniform items) the shop will be closed for renovations for 4-6 weeks. If your child requires a new school jumper, we have a range of second hand items available via the school office, alternatively you may wish to purchase a plain navy blue windcheater from a retail store.
Winter hats should be plain navy blue beanies. Hoodies are not to be worn at school.
Book Week celebrations, beginning Monday 19th August…..more information below further on in this newsletter.

2-3 Glen Planetarium Excursion
On Thursday, August 15th, to celebrate National Science Week and as part of our Science Inquiry, 2-3G will be visiting the QVMAG at Inveresk. We will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the first moon walk at the Planetarium, being inspired and amazed at the space-related experiments in the Crazy Scientist Show, being challenged by interactive activities related to space missions, and learning how the moon may hold the key to the dinosaur extinction on Earth as we explore the Dinosaur rEVOLUTION Exhibition.
- We will leave school by bus at 9:30am and return to school by 2:30pm.
- Students will need to wear school sports uniform and bring a warm jacket, a recess snack, a cut lunch and a drink.
We would love to hear from any parents with a current Working With Vulnerable People Card who would be willing to accompany us and work with a small group of children.
Jacqueline Glen, Class teacher
1 McCoy, 1 Gibbons/McArthur, 1-2 Youdale and 2 Paulsen Museum Excursion
Grades 1 McCoy, 1 Gibbons/McArthur, 1-2 Youdale and 2 Paulsen will be visiting the Queen Victoria Museum as part of their moon work. Classes will be visiting the Dinosaur Exhibit and the Planetarium. Students will be leaving at 9:20am on their allocated day and returning before lunch. Students will need to be in full school winter uniform. Students will need to bring fruit, morning tea and a drink in a labelled plastic bag.
1 McCoy and 1 Butler will be going on Tuesday, 3rd September.
1-2 Youdale and 2 Paulsen will be going on Wednesday, 4th September.
We require three helpers with a Working with Vulnerable People card per class to attend. Could you please talk to your child’s teacher if you are interested in helping on the excursion.
With thanks Brooke McCoy, Terri Gibbons, Lisa McArthur, Leonie Youdale and Laine Paulsen.
Kindergarten Hagley Excursion
Kinder House and Kinder Leedham - Tuesday 3rd September
Kinder Williams - Thursday 12th September
On Tuesday 3rd September Kinder H and Kinder L and on Thursday 12th September Kinder W will be travelling to Hagley Farm School for 'hands on' animal experiences connecting us with our environment. The children will need plenty to eat and drink and a warm coat. Gumboots or a spare pair of shoes and socks will be handy especially if there has been some rain in the few days prior to our excursion. We will leave at about 9.20am and return by 2:45pm.
Limited spaces for parent help. Please talk to your class teacher.
Lynette House, Rebecca Leedham and Melinda Williams
3 Hill and 4 Horkings Excursion to Hollybank
On Tuesday 10th September our classes will be travelling by bus to Hollybank. We will be learning more about the life cycles of plants. We will be identifying native plants and recognising environmental factors that affect life cycles and seed germination. This is part of our science inquiry unit which is called Plants in Action.
We will be leaving school promptly at 9:15am in the morning and returning back to school by 2:45pm. All children should wear their PE uniform and bring their hat, jumper and a coat as the Hollybank area can be a lot colder than the city.
We respectfully ask that children do not bring umbrellas as they can become a safety issue. Children will also need a packed recess, lunch and large drink.
Amanda Horkings and Claire Hill
Attention: Parents and Carers of students in Years 1–3
The wellbeing of our students is important to us.
To get an understanding of how students across Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in Years 1–3 at Norwood Primary will be taking part in a wellbeing survey.
This is a trial of the Early Years wellbeing survey, Rumble’s Quest, which is being trialled across 28 schools, as part of the Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
The details for the survey in our school are:
Name of survey: Rumble’s Quest
When: Week beginning 12th August
Who: Students in Years 1–3
What do I need to do: You and your child do not need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all students in Years 1–3, including Frequently Asked Questions, and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact Lynn Wyllie-Watson.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
Please Note - Grades 4 - 6 will also be surveyed in relation to well being in week 6 of this term.

Dress up as a book character is on Wednesday 21st August. We will be holding a whole school assembly at 11:30am to celebrate Book Week. Due to Department regulations, parents will not be permitted to take photos during this time.
Please note - this is part of our celebration of quality Australian literature, therefore we are asking students to have the book with them on the day that they are representing. Students are welcome to borrow these from the school library.
Costumes do not have to be bought, see what you can find at home and create. Here are some examples...
A reminder to parents and carers if your child will be absent please notify the school by 9:30am. You can do this in person, email school at norwood.primary@education.tas.gov.au, (please do not email individual staff members), phone (63442533), text message (0407 665 749) and via the Schoolzine App. If student attendance remains unexplained after three days, parents will receive a follow up text message for them to please notify the school of these absences. Thank you!
Sam Ayre (teacher) and Queechy High School are celebrating 150 years of the Periodic Table. 20 students from NPS have been invited, on Tuesday the 13th August, to participate in some science demonstrations and an art project at the high school on this day. Students will need to wear their uniform and bring an old shirt to wear during the art activity (students may get paint on their clothes). Mr Driessen will accompany the group.

Our annual program for children in grades 3-5 is approaching and will be held at the Launceston Aquatic Centre.
Please remember to have your child equipped with the appropriate attire and prepared to swim on day one. I strongly encourage all students involved to fully commit to attending this compulsory swimming, life-saving and fitness - developing program.
Every day counts! If your child is unable to attend all or part of this compulsory program a medical certificate may be required. Being confident in and around aquatic environments is a very important life skill.
You will need:
- Bathers
- Towel
- Plastic bag (for wet bathers, towel etc.)
- Goggles (can be taken but will be used sparingly during the program)
- School windcheater - to put on when leaving the pool.
Please remember that if your child regularly accesses the canteen on Thursdays and Fridays, the above timetable may have an effect on recess and lunchtime ordering. We will also allow 15 minutes either side of the one hour session for travel and change room procedures, e.g: 9:20am - 10:20am timeslot, bus leaves school at 9:05am and returns to school at 10:35am approx.
If parents wish to observe their child at work during the program, they will need to inform the Aquatic Centre front desk of their purpose, or pay admission. The first 2 days and the last 2 days of the program are best avoided when observing. We are expecting Mr Leighton to be one of the swimming tachers and Mr Humphrey will be the teacher in charge. Students will not have PE during this fortnight. Gary Jones

If you would like to volunteer on any of these days, please contact stall co-ordinator Angela Hawley on 0422210527 or register your interest on the sign up sheet, which is available on the parent notice board next to the school office. Younger siblings are welcome and encouraged to come and help out too!
If you would like to make a donation, we are still needing the following items:
- boxes of coffee/hot chocolate sachets
- bags of individually wrapped lollies (eg toffees or chews)
- multi packs of chocolates (no nuts please)
- individually wrapped biscuits
- mini deodorants
- pens and highlighters
- mini notepads
All items need to be unopened and in their original packaging. Donations can be left at the school office. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Angela on 0422210527. Thank you very much for supporting this year’s Father’s Day Stall!
