Welcome to Term 2. I am very proud to be here at Norwood and have had a wonderful 1st 2 days. Recently I have been Acting Principal at East Launceston, Trevallyn and West Launceston Primary schools and am looking forward to getting to know another 500 children! During my short time here I have been very impressed with how our children follow the school values of being Responsible, Respectful and Resilient. This has been particularly evident as they have introduced themselves to me and offered to show me around the school.
This term we welcome Nicole Moir to our Norwood team. Nicole is the Acting School Business manager and joins us from Evandale Primary School. We have a number of new families who have joined us and we know they will settle in to our school and enjoy being a part of our community.
I am very much looking forward to the term ahead and being part of Norwood Primary School.
ANZAC Day
Our school was well represented at the ANZAC Day march last Thursday, thank you to those who were able to attend.
National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
NAPLAN commenced in Australian schools in 2008. Each year, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in common national tests which assess:
- Reading
- Writing
- Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
- Numeracy
The tests will take place between 14th – 24th of May.
The benefits of participating in NAPLAN testing:
- NAPLAN tests the skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.
- NAPLAN results provide valuable information on how your child is progressing against national minimum standards of literacy and numeracy skills expected for each year level.
- The NAPLAN tests provide you as parents with an individual report that shows your child’s results and a comparison of your child’s performance against all other Australian students in their year level.
- Teachers use the NAPLAN results to determine your child’s areas of strength and where future focus is required and how best to provide support or extension activities.
- School teachers use the online NAPLAN Toolkit to analyse your child’s results. The Toolkit provides detailed information right down to the individual question with links to teaching strategies.
- Principals, senior staff and others use NAPLAN results to inform school planning and to allocate resources and support including informing decisions around targeted programs and initiatives for individuals and groups.
The best way you can assist your child is by helping them to feel comfortable about the nature and purpose of the tests, and assure them that the tests will give them an opportunity to show what they have learned in class.
For more information about the national tests, please visit the national NAPLAN website at: http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/naplan.html

4H and 3H Excursion to Hollybank
On Thursday 9th May our classes will be travelling by bus to Hollybank. We will be learning more about the life cycles of plants. We will be identifying native plants and recognising environmental factors that affect life cycles and seed germination. This is part of our science inquiry unit which is called Plants in Action.
We will be leaving school promptly at 9:15am in the morning and returning back to school by 2:45pm. All children should wear their PE uniform and bring their hat, jumper and a coat as the Hollybank area can be a lot colder than the city.
We respectfully ask that children do not bring umbrellas as they can become a safety issue. Children will also need a packed recess, lunch and large drink.

Kinder Excursions
We are excited to be off on our first excursions to the PCYC and City Park. The purposes of our trip are to be involved in gross motor challenges and to observe seasonal changes in our environment. Kinder Leedham and Kinder Williams will be leaving school at approx. 9:20am on Friday May 17th and will be returning in the afternoon. (Please see your child's teacher if you require more specific times.) Kinder House will be leaving at 9.40am and returning after lunch on Tuesday May 14th. All children will need to wear their normal sports uniform, including sandshoes. Everyone will require a PACKED lunch and plenty to drink (Please note there will be NO lunch orders available on Friday May 17th for Kinder Leedham and Kinder Williams.) Warm coats and beanies are essential. Parent help is invited. Please see your child’s teacher as soon as possible if you are interested – you must have a current Working with Vulnerable People card.
Many thanks,
Melinda Williams, Bec Leedham and Lynette House

Prep Coyle visited Seahorse World to learn all about what living things need to survive. We had a busy day, learnt lots about habitats and even got to hold a live seahorse.
Welcome back to term 2! It was great to see so many smiling, eager faces this week.
We have already launched into some learning about autumn. If you have evergreen and deciduous trees at your house please do some investigating to follow up our work at school. We are also exploring repeating patterns in our maths program. I have asked the children to keep an eye out for repeating patterns at home. If they find a simple pattern eg. blue stripe, red stripe, blue stripe, red stripe, it would be appreciated if they could bring it along for sharing.
Just a note to let you know that the children will need to have a coat and beanie in their bags as the weather cools off. We will still be going outside for gross motor activities.
Reminder that library day is still on a Thursday. Keep up the great reading and return of books on a weekly basis.
Excursion news very soon – PCYC and City Park. Parent help will need Working with Vulnerable People Cards.
Parent help at other times is now welcome – just see me to arrange a mutually convenient time.
Thank you. Lynette House
Grade 6 students will participate in this 'just in time' learning with external facilitators, Kylie and Michelle of Little Bird Inc. Key messages about self, adolescence, and repect are shared. The program will be on Thursdays this term and we thank the Parent Association for their financial support.
