Community News
Dear NPS Families
It is hard to believe that there are only two weeks left in Term 3! It has been a busy and productive Term so far with lots of engaging learning happening across the school. Thank you to all our families that visited our Open Classrooms last week. It was wonderful to see the celebrations of learning and the engagement with the range of activities set up across the classrooms. If you were unable to attend these sessions, Evidence of Learning will be sent home at the end of this week. Thank you to our teachers and students for the preparation that went into ensuring the Open Classrooms were such a success.
At our last assembly, I took some time to reflect with students on the many and varied amazing opportunities that we engage in at Norwood Primary in addition to our classroom learning. These include Science Week, Book Week, visits from the Tasmanian of the Year and Local Hero of the Year to work with our Student Parliament, Singfest, excursions to the Beaconsfield Mine, Museum, Franklin House and Hagley, F1 in Schools, Cricket Tasmania workshops and much more. It has been wonderful to see the way that our students have engaged in these opportunities with such enthusiasm, and the respectful way in which they contribute to the events. Our students should be very proud.
Kind regards,
Jess Bennett | Assistant Principal

Mindfulness is an important part of our Health and Wellbeing lessons that we have begun to introduce at the beginning of our lessons. Mindfulness helps children develop greater emotional awareness, focus, and resilience. By learning to pay attention to the present moment with kindness and curiosity, the children are able to better manage stress, reduce their anxiety, and improve their ability to concentrate in class. It also supports positive relationships by encouraging empathy and self-regulation. Practicing mindfulness regularly can lay the foundation for lifelong mental and emotional well-being. Most of the children look forward to this time to be still, present and quiet. Some find it more difficult, particularly the staying still part! We will continue to work on this as a focus, so we can reflect on how our body and mind feels after our mindfulness session, and hopefully make this a goal to achieve as the children progress through life.

Make sure you check in with our school Facebook page, this week we have posted a video connected to our Partnership with Real Schools. Our Student Parliament have put together a snapshot of “Check In Circles”. You can read more about it here Why is everyone in a circle? | Parent Portal | Real Schools.
We love seeing your children at school, every day. Going to school every day gives your child every chance to learn, grow and connect with their friends and teachers. It gives us a chance to engage with your child. We all play a part in helping our kids get to school every day. It’s where bright futures start and where they’ll benefit the most. With an education and support for wellbeing, anything is possible for our children and young people.

Asthma Week
This Asthma Week (September 1-7) Asthma Australia is asking parents to help flip the script and Attack Asthma for their child. It’s time we Attack Asthma before the symptoms start!
Asthma is one of the leading causes of children ending up in hospital. New research by Asthma Australia shows that while most parents feel like they are confident in managing their child’s asthma, nearly two thirds live in constant fear of an asthma attack.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
A daily preventer can help keep your child's asthma under control, reducing the chance of an attack. This means less time feeling sick or in the hospital and more time for them to just be a kid. Instead of waiting for symptoms like wheezing or difficulty breathing, use a preventer every day to help your child breathe normally.
Learn more about how to Attack Asthma here: www.asthma.org.au/attack
We are getting a huge amount of lost property. Please ensure your school clothing and items are clearly named. If your child has lost any clothing, drink bottles or lunch containers, please see the school office to look through our unnamed lost property. We would love to get these returned to families.
In October we will be celebrating 60 years of Norwood Primary School. Are you or do you know of a past student or staff member that would be interested in sharing a favourite memory of Norwood Primary School? We would love to capture some very short videos. Please contact jess.bennett@decyp.tas.gov.au. We are also collecting photos and past memorabilia (reports, certificates, uniforms) for a display, please drop this to the front office or email us your photos.
Excitedly, this year Norwood is again participating in the STEM Racing Australia F1 In Schools Competition. This involves the students working in teams of 3 to design, test and time trial mini formula 1 cars. The teams must work closely together to create the fastest possible car they can within a very strict set of rules.
This is our 6th year participating and we have several former students now participating in the High School Competition, with some even going to the National Championships. Last year we finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the State finals.
The competition will be held in Launceston at the Tailrace Centre on the 26th November. Excitedly we have 10 teams participating, with 5 designing and making 3D printed cars and 5 designing and making balsa wood cars.
We are seeking sponsorships for our cars to support our participation. The sponsorship cost is $300 dollars, and we will put your company’s logo on the car, and you will also get to keep a version of the car. For more information, please contact Duncan Walker at duncan.walker@education.tas.gov.au
