Community News
Dear NPS Families
It's been a very busy couple of weeks since our last newsletter with Science Week, Book Week and Excursions.
Our students have embraced these events with great enthusiasm on top of the everyday learning that continues during this time. Snap shots of Book Week and Science Week can be seen further on in this newsletter and via our Facebook page.
There is still more to come this Term so please keep an eye on the calendar below for upcoming events.
Our annual Fathers' Day stall is one event that will be running again this year thanks to our hard working School Association members and helpers.
This event is always well supported by our school community with most students making purchases for dads, grandparents and other important people in their lives. It is, however, very important to keep in mind that this is only possible each year because of the dedication of the School Association.
That's it from me today, as there are lots of snapshots of what has been happening further on so keep reading!
Staff also had lots of fun with Book Week!
Kind regards,
Karen Monaghan | Principal

On Thursday the 4th September we are welcoming families to our Open Classrooms. This is an opportunity to visit the classroom with your child.
As part of the session, your child will share with you learning from this year and engage with you to play games and activities they participate in within their class.
To ensure that class teachers can be prepared for each session, please use the link below to book into the session that will suit you and your child best. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak with your child’s class teacher or Jess Bennett.
What a wonderful and busy week we had at NPS celebrating Book Week!
Book Week was filled with lots of lovely things happening around the school for students to enjoy. Our Literacy Leaders organised many reading/literacy related activities that ran throughout the week and Mrs Jago (Amelia Earhart sheep) added to the Book Week fun with her organisation of lunchtime library activities for our ECE students.
Our dress-up parade was lots of fun, followed by a scavenger hunt, reading with our buddies, a shared story over the speaker, a talent show and a ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’ class challenge. Seeing all the wonderfully creative book characters across our school made for a really positive, happy day!

The grade 6 STEM Leaders researched and created a variety of activities for our classes to explore some of the many different aspects of Science. The students enthusiastically engaged in learning about electricity, driving Sphero’s, making music using Makey Makeys and how bubbles can be made in water using just two pencils and a battery!

Prep A
Prep Dahl had a wonderful time during Book Week. This Term we have really grown our writing skills.

5/6E
We have been working on creating information reports that detail the following:
- Reasons the British wanted to colonise Australia.
- Hardships in setting up the Sydney Cove colony.
- The impact that colonisation had on convicts and the Australian Aboriginal people.
This task tied in nicely with our trip to Beaconsfield Gold Mine as the tour guide spoke about the timeline in which colonies in Tasmania were established.

Excitedly, this year Norwood is again participating in the STEM Racing Australia F1 In Schools Competition. This involves the students working in teams of 3 to design, test and time trial mini formula 1 cars. The teams must work closely together to create the fastest possible car they can within a very strict set of rules.
This is our 6th year participating and we have several former students now participating in the High School Competition, with some even going to the National Championships. Last year we finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the State finals.
The competition will again be held in Launceston at the Tailrace Centre on the 26th November. Excitedly we have 10 teams participating, with 5 designing and making 3D printed cars and 5 designing and making balsa wood cars.
We are again seeking sponsorships for our cars to support our participation. The sponsorship cost is $300 dollars, and we will put your company’s logo on the car, and you will also get to keep a version of the car. For more information, please contact Duncan Walker at duncan.walker@education.tas.gov.au

In Health and Wellbeing classes this Term, we are focusing on relationships. We have asked many questions like, what makes a good friendship, why is respect an important part of any relationship and what are our individual personal boundaries with different relationships? The children have talked about having invisible ‘bubbles’ around themselves. Depending on who they are with, the size of their bubble may change, and each person’s bubble, may look a little different. This is a great way for children to understand physical boundaries, as well as discussing what is a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ touch. We have also discussed those physical feelings you may get or, ‘no’ feelings, when their personal boundary is crossed. This might be that yucky feeling in your tummy, a change in your body temperature, a dry throat or shaky feeling. This alerts children to those real feelings of knowing when their personal bubble has been crossed, and it is ok to say no to those touches. We will continue to explore these themes of safety and relationships throughout this Term.
Real Schools 2.0
As we continue to grow school culture as part of our partnership with Real Schools, our staff and students are working together to support positive behaviour. Our focus has been on language using Positive Priming and Affective Statements, shared in our past newsletters. To support students to understand their actions, express their feelings, and work towards making amends we are sharing with you how we engage in Affective Interactions. This method involves guiding children through a process of reflection and resolution by discussing the past, present, and future. This short article explains it further and how it can support you at home. One-on-one Affective Interactions: Past, Present, Future | Parent Portal | Real Schools
On September our School Choir will be performing at Singfest 2025, and ticket sales are now open for this year’s event.
Tickets are $10.50 including booking fee and are purchased on trybooking.com
In October we will be celebrating 60 years of Norwood Primary School. Are you or do you know of a past student or staff member that would be interested in sharing a favourite memory of Norwood Primary School? We would love to capture some very short videos. Please contact jess.bennett@decyp.tas.gov.au. We are also collecting photos and past memorabilia (reports, certificates, uniforms) for a display, please drop this to the front office or email us your photos.
On Friday the 25th July 5/6 Spencer were lucky enough to have a visit from Adam and Nic from ChilliFM. Miss Spencer made nametags with all sorts of animals and a picture of themselves on it. We made a Quiz to test their knowledge that contained questions like: What is Peppa Pigs little sister’s name? What is Mr Bean’s teddy’s name and how does he pronounce it? Does chocolate belong in the fridge? What is a better example of a flex? A: Saying you brushed your teeth that morning or B: Saying you have 1 million followers? We then had lots of laughs watching them do our tie breaker which was an Oreo challenge. They had to manoeuvre an Oreo from their forehead down to their mouths without their hands touching it. Nic had won the quiz/tie breaker. After the hilarious tie breaker, we did a just dance that we had practiced many times earlier that morning. After we did the Just dance, we had many more laughs with Hawka, the Hawthorn FC mascot. We thoroughly enjoyed it, and we would gladly accept another visit.

Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
At Norwood Primary, the wellbeing of our students is a top priority. We want to hear directly from our students about how they’re feeling and what’s happening in their lives.
Students in Year/s 4-6 will soon be participating in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. This important survey helps us build a clear picture of our students’ current wellbeing and identify ways we can better support them to thrive and engage in learning. The more students who take part, the more meaningful the insights will be.
This survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
Survey Details:
When: From Monday the 1st September
Who: Students in Year 4 – 6 as part of Health and Wellbeing lessons
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Year 4-6 students. This includes a list of Frequently Asked Questions and a form to return if you do not want your child to participate.
If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact Jess Bennett or Scott Driessen.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to ensure every student feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.
If your child requires ‘over the counter’ medication at school you must sign a parent permission form.
If your child requires prescribed medication (eg. antibiotics) you must have an ‘Administration of Prescribed Medication Authorisation’ completed by a doctor, pharmacist or practice nurse. These forms are available at the school office or from the Department for Education, Children and Young People website.
All medication must be handed into the school office in the original packaging. Students can only have their asthma medication in their bags.
If your child has Asthma and requires Asthma medication (eg. Ventolin) at school we will need an Asthma Action Plan signed by a doctor and parent as well as an ‘Administration of Prescribed Medication Authorisation’ completed by a doctor, pharmacist or practice nurse. These must be updated annually.
Please ask at the School Office if you have any questions.
