Dear NPS Families
It was an honour yesterday to have the Australian of the Month team visit, to join our Assembly and award this months 'Aussie of the Month' student recipients, Maisy S & Brady W.
Keren Franks the 2025 Tasmanian Local Hero, Founder of Young Leaders of Tasmania and Sam Elsom the 2025 Tasmanian Australian of the Year, Founder of Sea Forest shared some of their background story that led to them being acknowledged for their work with the award.
Some of our classes had well thought out and prepared questions to ask either Sam or Keren. I would like to acknowledge the classes who participated in developing the questions, and the students who stood up to ask them, for the deep thinking and preparation that went into each of these.
Did you know that seaweed is used in many everyday items that we use, including many toothpastes!!
Our Student Parliament, Senior Student Leaders and all Aussie of the Month recipients for 2025 met with the team after assembly for a Q & A whilst enjoying morning tea. Once again, our students were very well prepared and ‘shone’ with their interactions.
We appreciate the team visiting Norwood PS within their busy schedule. They each expressed how much they enjoyed the visit and the interactions with our students. Also, being very complimentary about how lovely our school is!
Congratulations to our Senior Student Leaders for their excellent preparation and hosting of the event.
Please check out our Facebook page for photos.
60th Anniversary
This year we celebrate 60 years of Norwood Primary School. We will be celebrating this with a special assembly during Term 4. The following will also be part of the celebrations....
- Assembly:Week 4, Term 4. The School Association and guest speaker will be invited.
- Stickers for Students: a special NPS 60th sticker has been designed and each student will be given one of these on the day of the Assembly.
- Cake: Our School Association will join the staff for a special morning tea after the assembly.
- Drone footage: students will be co-ordinated to assemble into the numeral 60 on the oval which will be filmed using our drone.
- Foyer Display: A 60 Years of NPS will be designed for the foyer.
- Tea Towel: Our School Association is organising a tea towel with all our students self-drawn images printed on it for families to purchase if they wish to do so.
Finally, if any families or friends have any items or photos of the past 60 years involving NPS, we would love to borrow them or copy the photos. Please bring these to the school office.
Kind regards,
Karen Monaghan | Principal

On Thursday the 4th September we are welcoming families to our Open Classrooms. This is an opportunity to visit the classroom with your child.
As part of the session, your child will share with you learning from this year and engage with you to play games and activities they participate in within their class.
To ensure that class teachers can be prepared for each session, please use the link below to book into the session that will suit you and your child best. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak with your child’s class teacher or Jess Bennett.
It was fantastic to acknowledge students across the school yesterday, who were deserving recipients of Values Certificates. These certificates highlighted those students who have displayed exceptional behaviour, an outstanding approach to learning and academic excellence. Congratulations to all recipients.

Kinder B
In Kinder, our curious learners have stepped into the role of researchers and communicators as we begin our exciting lead-up to Science Week! Our classroom has transformed into a buzzing science lab, where students have been predicting, experimenting, and sharing their thinking with peers. Through both group and individual investigations, children have been developing inquiry skills by asking “what will happen next?” and exploring scientific ideas in hands-on ways.

5/6D
Colonisation Work by Ava, Annie, Aria and George
5/6D has been exploring the Colonisation of Australia for HASS. We wrote a definition about convicts, free settlers and Indigenous Australians. In groups we brainstormed why we thought Britain sent people here to start a colony. Britain was running out of space in their prisons so decided to send them to Australia.
We made our own colony through Art. We sketched illustrations of free settlers, convicts and marines using the book A-Z of Convicts in Van Diemen’s Land by Simon Barnard. We used pencils and watercolour paint to create our art. Then we made a collage using our cut out images to create a colony.

It’s almost time for one of our favourite weeks of the year - Book Week!
Our Literacy Leaders are busy planning activities to run across the school and staff have a dress-up theme up their ‘woolly’ sleeves (hint hint).
Tuesday 19th August will be our annual dress up parade which parents are invited to view from the kinder yard.
This will run from 9:10 - 9:30 (approx.).
Rather than splashing out on expensive costumes, we encourage students to get creative with items from home; cardboard creations and clothes from the cupboard can be just as effective as store-bought costumes.
We’re looking forward to ‘Booking an Adventure’ as we celebrate our love of reading.
Prep
Prep have been learning so many valuable strategies to help understand their feelings and how we can be great friends, great learners and feel great within! While the Zones of Regulation have been our main focus, we have had two lessons focusing on emotional regulation- specifically with ‘up regulating’ and ‘down regulating’. The children are learning that sometimes when we feel in the blue zone (sad, lonely, disappointed, tired), one of our strategies to come out of the blue zone, is to ‘upregulate’. This could include physical movement, sensory input, and engaging activities that stimulate the mind. On the flip side, when we are feeling like we are in the yellow zone, whether stressed/ angry or hyper/ silly, we sometimes need to ‘downregulate’. This is more calming activities, such as reading, quiet focus play (puzzles/ LEGO etc), breathing techniques, and so on. The children are beginning to understand these techniques and the language is becoming part of their everyday life, in order to be able to become emotionally regulated in those tricky times.

Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
At Norwood Primary, the wellbeing of our students is a top priority. We want to hear directly from our students about how they’re feeling and what’s happening in their lives.
Students in Year/s 4-6 will soon be participating in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. This important survey helps us build a clear picture of our students’ current wellbeing and identify ways we can better support them to thrive and engage in learning. The more students who take part, the more meaningful the insights will be.
This survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
Survey Details:
When: From Monday the 1st September
Who: Students in Year 4 – 6 as part of Health and Wellbeing lessons
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Year 4-6 students. This includes a list of Frequently Asked Questions and a form to return if you do not want your child to participate.
If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact Jess Bennett or Scott Driessen.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to ensure every student feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.
On September our School Choir will be performing at Singfest 2025, and ticket sales are now open for this year’s event.
Tickets are $10.50 including booking fee and are purchased on trybooking.com
Real Schools 2.0
We are continuing to build our skills and understanding around language. Positive Priming is a tool we use to talk to the behaviour that we want to see in our children, our teachers are working with our students on this every day. This short video and article talk more about the work we are doing with students to grow our positive school culture. Excitedly, this year Norwood is again participating in the STEM Racing Australia F1 In Schools Competition. This involves the students working in teams of 3 to design, test and time trial mini formula 1 cars. The teams must work closely together to create the fastest possible car they can within a very strict set of rules.
This is our 6th year participating and we have several former students now participating in the High School Competition, with some even going to the National Championships. Last year we finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the State finals.
The competition will again be held in Launceston at the Tailrace Centre on the 26th November. Excitedly we have 10 teams participating, with 5 designing and making 3D printed cars and 5 designing and making balsa wood cars.
We are again seeking sponsorships for our cars to support our participation. The sponsorship cost is $300 dollars, and we will put your company’s logo on the car, and you will also get to keep a version of the car.
