We are now in the final stages of staffing and class organisation for 2020. We will continue with the same amount of classes as this year with a few small changes to the class structure.
Class structure is determined on what will work best with factors such as year group & gender numbers. This can be a very difficult process and a great deal of time and discussion occurs before a final decision is made.
We will once again have a range of straight year groups and composite classes. It’s important to know that children’s learning is in no way disadvantaged from the class structure they are placed in. We work very hard to ensure that children’s learning needs are being catered for by using a range of formative assessments that tell us where students are with their learning and where they need to go next.
Our class structure for 2020 will be ……
Kinder | Gr 1-2 | Gr 4-5 |
Kinder | Gr 2 | Gr 5 |
Kinder | Gr 2-3 | GR 5-6 |
Prep | Gr 3 | GR 5-6 |
Prep | Gr 3-4 | GR 6 |
Prep-1 | Gr 3-4 | GR 6 |
Grade 1 | Gr 4 | |
Grade 1 |
Although most staffing is finalised, there are still a few placements to be confirmed. Our confirmed list of staff, including teachers assigned to classes will be published in our next newsletter. Students will bring home their allocated class with their school report on Friday 13th December.
This year we will farewell some staff…..
Mrs Jan Mickleborough will commence retirement at the end of the 2019 school year. Jan has been part of the Norwood team for 33 years and during this time has had a huge positive impact on hundreds of children…some of which I’m sure have also now seen their own children working with Jan. Jan has deeply loved her time at Norwood PS and is now looking forward to beginning the next chapter of her life.
Mrs Beverley Hooper will also commence retirement at the end of 2019. Bev has worked with a range of students throughout her 17 years at Norwood, and has ensured that our students have access to a very well-organised and structured library environment. She is now ready to move on to the next phase of her life.
Mrs Sam Coyle, also ready for a new adventure, will be heading off to take up the position of Kindergarten teacher at Trevallyn PS. Sam has mixed emotions about this decision, but feels that the timing is just right for a change.
Miss Amanda Summers, after a long wait, has finally gained full permanency with the DoE. This requires Amanda to make a move to a new school to begin this next stage of her career. Amanda will begin with Mowbray PS at the beginning of the 2020 school year.
Mrs Peta Terry has now attained flexible permanency with the DoE and has been given a full time class positon at East Launceston Primary.
We are ever so grateful for the dedication and support all of these people have given to Norwood PS. We will miss each of them and wish them the very best in each of their new adventures!

The crowd, who were allowed to watch today, thought the talent on show in the hall was great. About 200 students came to watch singing, dancing and instrumental performances. It was an appreciative audience and students of 5 Marshall tell me that the highlights were:
- Macy B singing 'When I Grow Up'
- Chloe T's jazz performance
- 'Highwayman' by Daniel S on violin
- Ethan W on keyboard

In Grade 5-6 Bannon we have been learning how to write persuasive pieces of writing. Here are two samples from our class.
English is more important than maths!!!!
I strongly agree there are many reasons for this, mine is it makes life easier, here are some reasons why.
If you don’t have English you can’t do maths because you wouldn’t be able to read, write, spell and talk.
English is all around us especially on school signs, shop labels and the
internet like google. It helps with your vocabulary so
you can say bigger words for mathematics.
Finally if you don’t have English you can’t talk or understand important things, like when you are supposed to go to important events.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars are Better than Electric
The truth is hydrogen fuel cell cars are sooo much better than electric cars and frankly electric cars are a dangerous rip-off!
Firstly electric cars can take up to 2 hours to charge every 100km! Imagine if you are going on a long trip. Do you really want to stop every 100km and wait for 2 hours? I didn’t think so!
Secondly each electric car uses 12kg of lithium which is dug out of the ground in third world countries. Mining this lithium is bad for the environment and just so you know LITHIUM IS TOXIC!!! How would you like to be digging a toxic metal from the ground on a tiny wage?
As proven by many blind people electric cars can become deadly, silent, weapons. Blind people need to be able to hear the cars coming if they don’t hear them coming they can get run over. This will not just happen to blind people it could happen to anyone. Sound is a safety precaution that electric cars don’t have.
So now you know why not to buy an electric car you may ask; “but why would I buy a hydrogen car?” Well there are so many reasons…
Firstly emissions from hydrogen fuel cell cars are low – they release mainly water vapour, which is just clouds. So even though you remove hydrogen (with electrolysis) from water and use water it all gets put back together to go again.
Fuel – they run on hydrogen (which is the most abundant and simple element in the universe) so
you can save the planet without taking 2-hour pit stops. They are just so much better than electric cars.
Now that you know you aren’t being told the full truth by electric car companies you know they aren’t so “clean green” and never to buy an electric car!!!

Last Friday our 5-6 classes attended the Norwood Swimming Carnival at the Riverside Pool. Terrific skills and friendly competition were on display on a day without wind.

Congratulations to Mr Humphrey on a successful carnival.
Water Orientation will begin on Monday 2nd December and continue through until Thursday 5th December. The sessions are from 9:30am until 10:30am. The independence and excitement of entering the water, sharing change-rooms and looking after clothing, as well as dressing oneself after swimming will all be important experiences in preparation for the grade 3 ten day program in 2020. Students are not to wear their bathers under their uniforms to school but change prior to lessons.
On the first day, Monday 2nd December, all students will attend to gain the pool rules and organisational structures. Over the 4 days students will attend 3 sessions each. Pool time on day 1 will be minimal.

What an exceptional walkathon we have had in 2019. And not just because of the weather on the day but due to the community support for this Student Parliament fundraiser.
$6000 has been raised to this point, with our highest fundraising classes being Prep Coyle/Green and 3 Barker. They will receive a complimentary piece of pizza as a thankyou.
We had over 30 students raise more than $50 for the cause. Parliament will be looking to support the playground with the money.
