Community News
Monday marked the beginning of a very busy last two weeks of term 3. Students particpating in the DoE Swimming and Water Safety program have made a wonderful start at the Aquatic Centre. Two weeks of organising gear and getting to and from the pool along with being focussed for high-level particpation, and then being engaged with class learning is a big ask for both students and staff. Well done to all for a great start!
Staffing News...
We are pleased to extend our congratualtions to Jamie Rae who has been successful for an Acting AST postion at Ravenswood Heights PS for term 4. I am also pleased to announce that Grace Bannon will continue on the class until the end of the 2019 school year.
Miss Terri Giibons and Mrs Lisa McArthur will continue on Grade 1B until further notice.
NAPLAN.....
Parents /Carers of students in Grades 3 & 5 should have recently received students individual NAPLAN results. If you would like some further information about results please speak with your child's class teacher or alternatively with myself, Gary Jones or Zoe Marshall. If you have not received results, please contact the school office.
Review of National Funding Arrangements for Kindergartens – survey for parents.....
An independent review (the Review) is being conducted into the national funding arrangements that support access by all children in Australia to 600 hours per year of quality early childhood education in the year before full-time school.
For Tasmania this is our Kindergarten year. Since 2008, the Australian Government’s UANP funding has supported an increase to 15 hours per week of Kindergarten in Tasmania, however the future of national funding is uncertain beyond 2020.
Tasmania has a long and proud history of providing free access to quality early learning and the Tasmanian Government has made substantial investments to support and expand this provision.
It is important that the success of Kindergarten in Tasmania is clearly understood in this national process and we encourage the Tasmanian education community, including parents, teachers, and leaders to participate in the review.
How you have your say:
- Complete the survey – online survey
- Write a public submission which closes at 11.59pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) 6 October 2019. You can email your submission to UANPReview@NousGroup.com.au
I strongly encourage each member of our school community to have your say by particpating in this review. Tasmanian is renowned for our LiL and Kindergarten structures so let's all get on board and ensure that we have the support we need to continue to provide the current high-level early learning expereinces.
Karen

The UV rating is currently high enough to cause damage to unprotected skin. The air temperatures are occasionally high enough to make the winter uniform too warm.
Students have permission to move into summer uniforms if they wish. Hats should be worn. And if you continue to wear the winter uniform (till the end of term) stockings are optional. Blue socks are the alternative.
Grade 3, 4 and 5 students will be wearing PE clothing regularly in the final 2 weeks of term as they participate in the swimming and water safety program.
To commence Term 4 all students should be in summer uniform and to access the playground hats will need to be on heads.

Please remember that if your child regularly accesses the canteen on Thursdays and Fridays, the above timetable may have an effect on recess and lunchtime ordering. We will also allow 15 minutes either side of the one hour session for travel and change room procedures, e.g: 9:20am - 10:20am timeslot, bus leaves school at 9:05am and returns to school at 10:35am approx.
If parents wish to observe their child at work during the program, they will need to inform the Aquatic Centre front desk of their purpose, or pay admission. The first 2 days and the last 2 days of the program are best avoided when observing. Students will not have PE during this fortnight.

Reading
On the first day of Term 3 Janne Vincent and Ann-Marie McKendrick (In-School Leaders) supported Karen Hampton, Principal of Norwood Primary School, to lead all QA staff in improving their understandings about how children learn to read and the complex processes for our students to become literate for all areas of learning. This was mainly linked to Reading Comprehension and Fluency. The session ensured that all staff were given consistent messages so we all have a shared understanding of how students make meaning through reading.
Guest Speaker
We are very fortunate to have secured the expertise of Anne Bayetto, Researcher & Lecturer in Inclusive & Specialised Education from Flinders University in Adelaide, to work with our QA staff in the final week of this term. Her topics will include Intervention, Teaching Reading in Grades 5-8 and an overview of the The Big 6. The Big 6 are research based elements that contribute to reading development; Oral Language, Vocabulary, Phonological awareness, Letter-sound knowledge, Comprehension and Fluency. This is a wonderful opportunity for our staff and will assist them in supporting students in classrooms. Thank you to Newstead College who have offered the use of their facilities for these two days.
Instructional Model
Queechy Alliance schools continue to work on their knowledge and implementation of the four phases of the Instructional Model (Engage, Explicit Teaching, Targeted Learning and Review) into their classroom practice.
Most recently, all seven schools have delivered professional learning on the Targeted Learning phase. Staff further developed consistency and alignment in their understanding of differentiation and the gradual release of responsibility whilst planning a future lesson/learning sequence for their students. The core, Effective Feedback, Formative Assessment and Quality Questioning, continue to be important elements that teachers consider when planning within each phase of the IM.
This occurs during the Explicit Teaching phase. |
The teacher works with groups of students who have similar learning needs. Students take greater responsibility for their learning while the teacher observes and intervenes as necessary to develop and reinforce learning. |
Students work collaboratively in groups or pairs. This might involve activities practising the content/ concept/skills introduced previously. |
Independent learning involves students applying, consolidating and transferring their learning to demonstrate understanding. |

Our school has again been selected to provide 20 randomly selected year 6 students, to answer an on-line quiz about government and Australian citizenship. This will inform curriculum co-ordinators of the effectiveness of the Australian Curriculum on this topic. The quiz will occur in early term 4.

50 of our School Choir members will be performing on Wednesday September 25th as part of the Singfest 2019 Choir. Tickets for the performance are being sold over the counter at Theatre North (next to the Princess Theatre, Brisbane Street, Launceston), or over the phone on 03 6323 3666 payable by credit card.

They will also be required again in the evening for the concert. During the day rehearsal children are to wear their PE uniform, and their best school uniform during the evening performance.
Well done to Emily D and Grace W who competed in the Tasmanian Band Competition over the weekend. Emily and Grace are part of the LC Junior Band who won their section with high praise from the adjudicators.
Well done to Riley H for representing Norwood and Tasmania as Team Captain of the State Track and Field Team. Riley is in Darwin this week competing in the SSA Track and Field National Championships. Good Luck Riley.
