Community News
Welcome to our very first eNewsletter developed through Schoolzine. We are still in the learning stage of using this so there may be a few bumps along the way. Our decision to develop our newsletter this way is part of our work towards being more environmentally friendly, more efficient in providing our school community with quick access to school information, and celebration of learning. Your feedback is most welcome.
It’s hard to believe that we are almost at the end of term 1! It has been a very busy and productive term. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the Norwood School Community and have settled in well to this new role. Many of you may already be aware through our School Association that I was successful in winning a Hardie Fellowship last year which will involve studying in the USA for term 2 this year.
Although, I feel hesitant to temporarily step out my Principal role after only one term, this is an opportunity that will have huge benefits for my long-term commitment to Norwood Primary School.
Mrs Rachel Brown has been the successful applicant to take on the Principal role for term 2. Rachel is currently Assistant Principal at East Launceston PS and has previously undertaken a number of Acting Principal roles, most recently at West Launceston PS.
I am very pleased to announce that Mrs Lynn Wyllie will continue with us as Assistant Principal for the remainder of the year. I know that the team will continue with the same dedicated approach to efficiency and school improvement as always. I look forward to completing the term with everyone and bringing back lots of new learning in term 3.

Prep Taylor Excursion
On Thursday the 4th April, Prep Taylor will be doing a bridge walk from Riverbend Park at Inveresk to the Cataract Gorge. This is part of our inquiry and STEAM work around bridges: ‘Why are they useful? How are they made?’
The bus will depart Norwood at 9:20am and return by 1:30pm. Children must wear their PE uniform and comfortable walking shoes. Please be prepared for all weather and pack a hat, coat and jumper. Children will need a packed morning tea, lunch and a big drink. Recess and lunch orders will not be available.
We need lots of adult helpers please! If you are unable to come for the whole time you might like to join us for the walking part which will be from approximately 9:40-11:00am. All adults participating in the excursion must have a WWVP card. Please let me know if you are available. Alison Taylor
Prep CG and Prep MW Excursion
As part of our Inquiry Unit, Needs of Living Things, we will be travelling to Seahorse World on Wednesday 10th April to explore their care.
This will be a full day trip and we will be leaving promptly at 9:05am, returning by 2:30pm. Children will need to wear their PE uniform and carry a hat, coat, drink bottle and full lunchbox as we will be having a picnic lunch at a nearby beach.
Parent help numbers are restricted to one per class so if you have a current WWVP card and you haven’t had the chance to be a helper as yet, please see your child’s teacher.

4H and 3H Excursion to Hollybank
On Thursday 9th May our classes will be travelling by bus to Hollybank. We will be learning more about the life cycles of plants. We will be identifying native plants and recognising environmental factors that affect life cycles and seed germination. This is part of our science inquiry unit which is called Plants in Action.
We will be leaving school promptly at 9:15am in the morning and returning back to school by 2:45pm. All children should wear their PE uniform and bring their hat, jumper and a coat as the Hollybank area can be a lot colder than the city.
We respectfully ask that children do not bring umbrellas as they can become a safety issue. Children will also need a packed recess, lunch and large drink.
Amanda Horkings and Claire Hill

On Wednesday 20th March the 3-6 Athletics Carnival was held at St Leonards Athletic Centre. With excellent weather and a new facility to use, student excitement was high, displayed best with some good participation in all events across the board.
Some outstanding overall results were had with Grade 6 House Captains Kiarra J and Riley H showing their athleticism in several outstanding performances. The battle between a number of talented Grade 5 boys was another highlight of the day.
House colours were out on show throughout the day which led to much competitive fun and enjoyment. The race for the first carnival win of 2019 was tight all day with Wattle ending up winners with 647 points, followed by Banksia on 603 and Waratah on 601.
Thank you to all those who helped on the day and the many parents who came and supported.
The 2019 Student Parliamentarians have been finalised, after a class process that culminated in a peer vote. Congratulations to the selected children. Presentation of badges will be during the final assembly of term, Wednesday 10th April at 2:20pm.

Scholastic Book Fair
Thank you so much for all of your support towards the Scholastic Book Fair fundraiser! Over $6300 worth of books were sold (smashing our goal of $5000), meaning we can purchase over $2200 worth of brand new books for the school library. Thank you very much to our dedicated team of volunteers who made the two week selling period run so smoothly. Competition winners have been notified and their prizes have been delivered to classrooms.
For those who have ordered books: Some books have already arrived and were delivered to classrooms on Monday. The rest should arrive and be delivered to classrooms by the end of next week. If there are any questions, feel free to contact me on 0422 210 527.
Thank you for helping us run a very successful fundraiser!
