Dear NPS Families
Although we are only in week 4 of our final term for 2024, there have already been many events & experiences across grades that students have been involved with, and there are many more to come. This all happens alongside, and as a part of, everyday curriculum learning. Each and every experience provides children with connection and growth in varying ways.
So far this term...
Kinder B Excursion to Platypus House | Prep Excursion to Hagley Farm | 3-4 excursion to Tasmanian Zoo |
F1 team competition | Loud Shirt Day | Peace Pole Ceremony |
Year 2 Swimming Program | 3-6 Swimming Carnival | |
Prep-2 HPE Hurricane's Incursion | 5-6 Basketball Tournament | ECE Olympic Themed Tabloid Sports Carnival |
We always try to celebrate school events on our Facebook page, on the day or within a few days.
We have noticed that our FB page interaction is not as great as it once was, and we are therefore attempting to post more regularly to boost the weekly interactions.
If you haven't already hit the follow button on our Facebook page, please do, so that you will receive notifications for school events and help boost the NPS profile.
Please ensure that you check the calendar below as there are many more events happening over the remainder of the term.
One of these is our Kindergarten Information session (Thursday 14th November @ 7:00pm). We look forward to meeting new families starting at NPS and welcoming young members of our existing families.
Kind regards,
Karen Monaghan| Principal

Prep A & B Excursion
Both prep classes had a wonderful day out at Hagley Farm for our long awaited excursion! The sun was shining (finally!) and the children were excited for the day ahead. We met our amazing hosts, Mike and Scott, and began our farm adventure. We got to feed the ducks, we saw the pigs, alpacas, goats and fed and pat the resident milking cow! We then explored seeds and the life cycle of a plant, which was perfect for our inquiry into living things. And of course, the egg collection, hen chasing (!) and the pinnacle of the Hagley experience, the tractor ride, topped off our day. The children ‘showed off’ Norwood in perfect style, with respect and responsibility shining through as our values for the day!
Kinder B Excursion
Kinder B had a wonderful excursion to Platypus House at Beauty Point. It was a fantastic way to conclude our inquiry about Australian animals.
3/4 Excursion
Last Wednesday, 30th November, all of our 3/4 classes went on a wonderful excursion to Tasmania Zoo.
Working in small groups, students moved about the zoo, exploring the different habitats that animals require for survival. Students also took note of where in the food chain living things belonged (producers, consumers or decomposers). The excursion provoked great curiosity and wonderings that are now being explored back in class.
Thank you to the many parent helpers that joined us on the day. The sun was shining, the animals were amazing, and a fantastic time was had by all.
On Monday 5th November, 9 students attended the “Gifted and Highly Able” workshop to celebrate their work this year. As a school we have had 28 students in grades 3-6 participate in the “Gifted and Highly Able” courses. These included coding, mathematics, literacy and science extension courses.
Students are nominated by Mr Walker to participate in these courses using their NAPLAN, PAT and classroom ratings.
These students had a fantastic morning meeting their online teachers face-to-face and participating in a variety of activities.
Congratulations to Banksia who took out our recent Grade 3-6 Swimming Carnival at the Riverside Pool. The weather held off and allowed for some excellent performances and resilience in the pool.

We had 5 teams with over 40 students participate in the Grade 5/6 Basketball Tournament on the weekend. The level of encouragement, support and enjoyment across all teams on the weekend was great to see.
We had 2 teams come away with the title of champions – our Division 1 5/6 Boys and Division 2 Grade 6 Girls.
A massive thank you to all families and friends who took the time to coach, manage, support and encourage our young athletes. Special thank you to Denita Garwood for helping to coordinate the weekend and Cameron Stevenson for some of the amazing photos captured.
Goodluck to our 36 students participating in the 3/4 Basketball Tournament around Launceston over the weekend coming. We wish our teams all the best!
Thank you to our parents and staff who have volunteered their time to take on coaching roles and support our teams. Out of school events like this would not be possible without your help and is truly appreciated!

As we enter term 4, there are multiple events taking place. See below for further information that will assist in supporting you to prepare. Class teachers will be having regular conversations with students around what will be expected and answering any specific clarifying questions.
Year 7 Orientation Day
Date: Wednesday, November 20th
Location: Queechy High School, Kings Meadows High School or Prospect High School
Orientation Day is being held at all Government schools on this day. This is an all-day structured high school timetable, enabling students to have an experience of what this will be like in 2025.
Our local schools are aiming to assist students and their families by making sure every child is prepared and feels supported in their choice for high school learning in 2025.
Please note:
Students do not attend Norwood at all on this day and there is an expectation that all students will find appropriate transport to their High School as they will in 2025.
Students attending an alternate high school are required at Norwood for this day.
Presentation Assembly
Date: Wednesday, December 11th commencing at 7.00pm. Students to meet their teachers at 6.45pm outside the venue.
Venue: Queechy High School gymnasium
Students are asked to wear their Year 6 Leavers Tops to this assembly with school appropriate bottoms. Students are asked to not wear tights to this event. Black shoes are preferred.
Celebration Dinner
Date: Tuesday 17th December arriving from 6.00pm for 6:30 seating – concluding at 8.45pm
Venue: Launceston Golf Club
Students are asked to dress smartly for this occasion. Arriving at the venue is not public, so normal transport is expected. Student will gather at the back of the venue for photo opportunities. Norwood Primary School has made a contribution in order to limit the impact on families. The cost of the dinner for 2024 will be $37. Payments for this dinner can be made at the school office. If you have any questions around this payment please discuss this with our School Business Manager, Nicole Moir. The golf club are able to cater for specific dietary requirements, please contact the school to advise of these ASAP. It is an expectation that students absent from school this day will not be attending the dinner.
End of Year Picnic – Years 5/6
Date: Monday 16th December
Venue: Riverside Aquatic Centre
Students are asked to bring bathers, towel, waterproof bag, sunscreen and hats on the day. The canteen at the pool will be available if students would like to bring along some money, however, we ask that students are given no more than $10. As per the school and the Department for Education, Children and Young People Sun Protection Policy, students must wear a swimming top (rashie), t-shirt or other appropriate cover when swimming. Students who are not wearing appropriate cover will have to remain in the shade. Parents should apply sunscreen to their child before sending them to school. The school will also have sunscreen available, however if you do not wish your child to use the school sunscreen please their own.
Leavers Tops
These can be worn every day in Term 4.
As with all school events, behavioural standards are to be maintained prior to and during each event. Students will be representing Norwood Primary School, therefore our high behavioural expectations and values will apply. The school reserves the right to withhold permission to attend event(s).
Thank you all for your support of our young people as they begin to transition into 2025.
WHERE: Norwood Primary School – Kinder Classrooms
DATE: Thursday, 14th November 2024
TIME: 7:00pm to 8:00pm
This is an opportunity to meet your child's teacher and find out helpful information to support your child's transition into Kinder 2025.
It is highly recommended for children to stay at home to enable parents to focus and ask questions without distraction.
As always, we do have a priority referral pathway for any students identified experiencing pain and serious dental issues - this program is called Lift the Lip, and is facilitated by your School Health Nurse, directly to our local teams to provide bookings for care in those circumstances.
