Dear NPS Families
Thank you for your support with having children well prepared for school each day for another term. Term 2 concludes this Friday, 5th July with school resuming for Term 3 on Monday, 22nd July.
It was wonderful to see so many families attending our recent Parent / Teacher conversations .....391 appointments were booked for this. We would love to have some feedback from you about the process and structure of these...below is a link to a very quick survey. Please take a few minutes to complete this as your feedback supports our organisation into the future.

The cold weather has certainly hit us quickly. Please ensure that children have a jumper and/or jacket with them each day during the winter months. Although some children will say "I don't feel the cold", their body certainly does, which can cause amongst a number of things, tiredness and loss of concentration.
This week we have lots of activities around the school to celebrate NAIDOC week.
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country.
These hands on activities, both in class and in the playground, are designed to support children's understanding of some of the cultural experiences of our First Nations cultures.

In 5-6 Faulkner / Spencer we have been exploring the following learning intention: As writers, how can we use persuasive devices to convince our readers?
We used the mentor text of Greta Thunberg's 2019 UN Climate Action Summit speech. We needed to become reading detectives to unpack all the persuasive language and devices this text used, and then apply it to our own learning. Here are some examples throughout our learning journey of persuasive texts!
Prep - Grade 2 classes were lucky enough to have the RACT visit, as part of our Health & Wellbeing lessons. As part of the health curriculum, the children focus on being a pedestrian and crossing the road safely, so we were excited to have the experts visit us and help teach us about this. We read a story, asked lots of questions and were able to practice being a pedestrian crossing the road on the zebra crossing. We have learnt lots about crossing the road safely!
We have approximately 300 picture books requiring covering in preparation to be used as part of our home reading program.
If you’re willing to help with this task, please visit the office to discuss which option works best for you. You could:
- Work at school during any time frame that works for you (you will require a current WWVP Card & have completed the online Volunteers Safeguarding Training)
- Take a stack of books and a roll of contact home to work on in the coming weeks
Thank you, in advance, for helping us with this task!
Last term, 8 students from 5/6 attended the Tasmanian Youth Climate Leaders Conference. We learnt about how changes in climate affect the world. We also learnt about how our decisions affect the world and that we can make a difference.
As part of our plan at Norwood, this year we will be hosting a National Tree Day Event on Friday 26th July. We are seeking volunteers to help us, along with a number of other students from throughout the school to help us plant on this day. We will have equipment, we just need your assistance with the digging and planting!!
Our planned space for this years event is the bank next to the down ball courts, allowing us to reduce soil erosion and beautify the space. We are planning on planting well over 100 plants on the day!
If you are able to help, and you have a Working with Vulnerable Childrens Card and have completed the online Volunteers Safeguarding Training, can you please contact Mr Walker or the school office.

Excitedly this year Norwood is again participating in the REA F1 In Schools Competition. This international competition involves the students working in teams of 3 to design, test and time trial mini formula 1 cars.
This is our 5th year participating and we have a number of former students now participating in the High School Competition, with some even going to the National Championships.
The competition will again be held in Launceston and we have 6 teams participating. For us to participate in this outstanding competition we are looking for sponsors for our car. The sponsorship cost is $300 dollars and we will put your company’s logo on the car and you will also get to keep a version of the car. For more information, please contact Duncan Walker or Nicole Moir at school for more information.
If your child requires ‘over the counter’ medication at school you must sign a parent permission form.
If your child requires prescribed medication (eg. antibiotics) you must have an ‘Administration of Prescribed Medication Authorisation’ completed by a doctor, pharmacist or practice nurse. These forms are available at the school office or from the Department for Education, Children and Young People website.
All medication must be handed into the school office in the original packaging. Students can only have their asthma medication in their bags.
If your child has Asthma and requires Asthma medication (eg. Ventolin) at school we will need an Asthma Action Plan signed by a doctor and parent as well as an ‘Administration of Prescribed Medication Authorisation’ completed by a doctor, pharmacist or practice nurse. These must be updated annually.
Please ask at the School Office if you have any questions.
