Recently, 57 of our Grade 3-6 students represented NPS in the LSSSA Cross Country Carnival. These students participated with excellent enthusiasm, behaviour and support for each other. All of our young athletes gave their events their all and should be proud of their efforts. Some excellent team running led to Norwood finishing 2nd in Division A – an outstanding performance in our first year in Division A for a very long time.
Selected students will also be representing our school at the upcoming All Schools Primary Cross Country at Symmons Plains.
Value Certificate Recipients
It was fantastic to acknowledge students across the school in the last week of May, who were deserving recipients of Values Certificates. These certificates highlighted those students who have displayed exceptional behaviour, an outstanding approach to learning and academic excellence. Congratulations to all recipients.

Excitedly this year Norwood is again participating in the REA F1 In Schools Competition. This international competition involves the students working in teams of 3 to design, test and time trial mini formula 1 cars. Last year one of our teams won the State Final, which will again be held in Launceston at the end of Term 3. For us to participate in this outstanding competition we are looking for sponsors for our car. The sponsorship cost is $250, which is the cost of registration. We will put your companies logo on the car and you will also get to keep the car. For more information, please contact Duncan Walker or Nicole Moir.
Transitioning from primary to high school is a time full of fun, excitement and new experiences, but it can also be challenging or worrying for many students and their families. Norwood Primary School are fortunate to be able to collaborate with local high schools in order to make this process a smooth one. Our local schools are aiming to assist students and their families by making sure every child is prepared and feels supported in their choice for high school learning in 2024.
Coming up we have experiences available for those students who will be attending Queechy High School and Kings Meadows High School, plus those students who are still unsure. The purpose of both of these experiences is to increase students connectedness to their Year 7 high school, whilst fostering engagement through introductory experiences.
Members of the transition team from Queechy High School will be visiting all Year 6 students at Norwood Primary on Thursday 15th June. During the session, our students will find out all that happens at Queechy while having the opportunity to ask questions of the team.
Year 6 students transitioning from Norwood Primary School to Kings Meadows High School in 2024 will be attending ‘Challenge Day’ on Monday 19th June. Students will experience a sample of the teaching and learning programs being offered at the school. The day is designed around a number of curriculum-based challenges, SWAT (My Education), HaSS, Maths, English, Science, Health & Physical Education, Arts & Technologies. Participating students will experience a typical Year 7 day at high school. Information around this day has already gone home to those students impacted.
A firefighter from the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) is visiting Norwood Primary School in weeks 10 and 11 of this Term, to present a Home Fire Safety Program to our Prep to Grade 6 students.
Kindergarten students, whilst not receiving a structured lesson, can expect a visit from the firefighter who will leave some free fun activites for the students to complete.
The age appropriate program is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in class activities, videos, activity books, website www.tfseducation.com.au and giveaways.
Parents and other family members are also encouraged to participate by reading the information and assisting your child with the after school activities.
The TFS aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.
Key Fire Safety Messages include,
Wake up - Install a smoke alarm in every bedroom
Plan and practice a home fire escape plan with the whole family
In a fire crawl low and go, go, go to the nearest exit
In an emergency call triple zero
Keep flammable material at least two metres from the heater
If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, rock and roll
Keep matches and lighters away from children
Cooking - Turn it off before you turn away
Cool a burn under cool water for at least 20 minutes
