We have had a wonderfully settled first three and a half weeks in our school. Our students are looking fantastic in their uniforms and are engaging and interacting well, both in the classroom and in the playground. This is a tribute to you as parents for the support you are giving your children and to our entire school staff for the care that they are putting into their teaching and learning programs and to our learning environments.
Throughout this term we are focusing on one of our school values – Respect – which is also one of our Department’s four values. In each class, students are discussing what respect looks and feels like. We are explicitly working throughout the school on the notion of respectful relationships in the classroom, in the playground and in the community. As a staff, we are committed to ensuring respectful teaching and learning environments with a focus on positive behavioural expectations as we understand that this empowers our students to:
- Respect themselves, respect others and respect property
- Be safe, responsible and respectful
- Respect relationships and respect responsibilities
- Respond to challenging situations constructively
As we visit classrooms, we observe our youngest students in kindergarten being supported to further develop their social skills right through to our senior students working collaboratively and respectfully with each other and their teachers. Our grade 5’s and 6’s recently participated in a full day seminar with JCP where they spent time learning about their own leadership potential with a focus on resilience and relationship building among their peers. Some of their follow up work from this day is shared in this newsletter.
On an entirely separate note, we would like you to join with us in wishing our Principal, Karen Hampton, all the best as she marries her long term partner, Patrick Monaghan on the weekend. She will be taking leave for a week from this Thursday. We wish them sunshine on Saturday and much happiness in the future.

My name is Nicole Garwood (Nikki). This is my 22nd year of teaching. I taught at Deloraine Primary School, Hagley Farm School and Summerdale Primary School prior to coming to Norwood. I am married and have one child, a 12 year old boy called Toby who has just started high school. I have 2 dogs, Theodore and Fergie who are both miniature schnauzers. I love reading and spending time at the beach. I am loving being part of the Norwood team, it is a wonderful school. |
I have been teaching for 15 years, this year I am teaching a Grade 2. I spent the past 11 years at East Launceston Primary School before joining Norwood. I am married and have two little boys. I enjoy spending time with my family at our shack on the East Coast. |
|
I am very excited to be a part of the wonderful Norwood Primary School community. Before Norwood I have taught grades 1-5 at Longford, Oatlands and Cressy. I live with my husband, two daughters and my Golden Retriever. When my girls aren’t keeping me busy I enjoy going for walks, reading, cooking, the gym and spending time with friends and family. |
|
I am very excited about coming to Norwood this year. My weekends are spent having lots of fun with my children, Jeb, Charlotte and Maggie. My last school was East Tamar Primary School.
|
|
I’ve spent the last fourteen years at the one school, teaching a range of grades from 3-6, as well as working in the literacy team and as a literacy coach. I was thrilled to be given a transfer to Norwood Primary this year, and feel so lucky to have joined such a kind and welcoming school community. I look forward to getting to know everyone! |
|
For the past two years I have worked as a teacher in Ravenswood. Prior to this, I taught in Victoria. I spend lots of time in my garden and cooking. I am really enjoying getting to know all of the wonderful staff, students and families at Norwood. |
|
I am the Acting Assistant Principal here at Norwood Primary School. I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work within the school and have been blown away with the supportive nature of all. This is my 4th Year as an Assistant Principal, having worked at Port Dalrymple School, East Tamar Primary School as well as a period of time on the Respectful Schools Support Team. I live locally with my wife and 2 young children and love to get outdoors with them, particularly going to the beach. I am really looking forward to working with the entire school community during 2021. |
|
I'm excited to be working at Norwood Primary School this year as an Education Support Specialist. I've spent many years working in early childhood classes and have a particular interest in teaching early literacy skills. In my role this year, I'll be spending most my time in Kinder and Prep and I'm very grateful for the warm welcome I have received from staff and students. When I'm not at work I enjoy spending time with my family and going camping. |
|
I'm excited to be starting a new page in my career at NPS. Having taught at Longford for 18years it was a big decision to make but I’m enjoying meeting new staff, students and parents and have been warmly welcomed into the Norwood community. My husband and I live close to Longford on 7acres and enjoy having the space to have some sheep, chooks and 1 spoilt dog! Lynton, my husband, works as the Groundsman at Longford Primary. Our daughter Georgia has just finished studying at Monash Uni in Melbourne and is now looking forward to her long awaited gap year overseas (when she can get there). |

Launching into Learning for 2021 started off with a busy session at ‘Forest Fun.’ The children had a lovely time investigating seed pods and had lots of wonderings. They also matched items in nature to colour wheels and collected lots of treasures in egg cartons and made lots of comparisons. We even ended up with a game of hide and seek in the forest!
Come and join us every Monday from 1:40pm - 2:40pm.

After our day with JCP, we get a weekly message to remind us about some of the key ideas. One of these is:
What you think is "LUCK" is a actually a moment when 'hard work' meets 'opportunity'.
This week, we want you to commit some hard work toward something you want luck in and then grab an opportunity when it arises.
*Work hard toward something you wish you were better at. Wait to see the results!*
After a rich class discussion in 5/6 Marshall, the students used a mind map to record some of their new learnings about leadership, motivation, influence, and self-belief.
Get creative as we would love to see photos showing you as a family reading together!! Thank you to those families who have already sent in some wonderful photos!
We are inviting you to send in a photo showing you enjoying reading at home or out and about! Prizes to be won!!
Please send your photos to the following email address - norwood.primary@education.tas.gov.au by 1st March, 2021
Please note: You must have given consent for your photos to be uploaded to school publications such as our school Facebook page and the school newsletter.
Prize winners will be announced in the 10th March newsletter.
Please speak to Mrs Fankhauser if you have any questions.
We look forward to seeing your amazing photos!

Great news for children coming to our kindergarten in 2022 and their families.
This year we will be providing all children with smaller, more intensive groups of pre-kinder in terms 1 and 2 to enable teachers to get to know the children more and respond to their individual needs. Each of these groups will run for approximately 5 weeks. Term 3 will have all our pre-kinder children divided into three larger groups. Term 4 will see the children allocated to one of three groups according to whom their teacher is likely to be in 2022.
Round 1 of the small pre-kinder groups will start March 3rd.
Round 2 will start at the beginning of term 2.
Letters have been sent out inviting you into round 1 groups. Please let the office know if you did not receive a letter.
If you know of any families who are in our school zone and have children starting kinder in 2022 please ask them to contact the school office.

Our School Canteen operates on Thursday and Friday ONLY! Orders can be made via the Qkr! App prior to 9:00am. It is a good idea to do your canteen orders the night before. If for some reason you need to cancel your order (eg. sick child) this can be done via the Qkr! App before 9:00am. Cash and counter sales are not available.
Canteen Volunteers Needed
Our school canteen would be unable to operate without the wonderful volunteers who help out on a Thursday and Friday. We are in need of more volunteers to join our roster. If we do not have sufficient volunteers the canteen will no longer be able to operate two days and will offer a limited menu. Please contact the office on 63442533 if you are able to help. Thank you!
