October 21st
Congratulations to everyone for supporting our Book Week event. A wonderful time was had by all, and what a treat to have the Examiner attend and publish such a positive story about our school. I was very unfortunate to have a prior commitment off-site in the morning so had to miss out on my dressing up for this year. I'll certainly be attempting to align this better for next year.
Road Safety
Please be aware of changes to the ‘drop off and pick up’ zone. This zone is no longer 5 minute parking. The Launceston City Council have installed no parking signs and extended the zone down in front of the school to the disable parking spaces.
This has been done in response to the back up of traffic which has become very unsafe as it interrupted the flow of the traffic. It will now be a pull in, stop and drop/pick up. Therefore, if your child/ren are not waiting when you get there, you will not be able to park and wait in the 'drop off and pick up’ zone.
We are currently waiting on new school signs, however the Launceston City Council signs clearly state no parking between 8:30 - 9:15 am and 2:30 - 3:15 pm.
2021
As per Department of Education policy for transfer of permanent staff, we will be having some changes in our teaching staff for 2021. This will mean that some of our long-term teachers will be moving on to new schools, and replaced with permanent DoE staff requiring transfers from other schools. At this stage I can confirm the following teaching staff changes.

Sam Hookway-Dare | Exeter | Kate Scolyer | Riverside |
Leonie Youdale | St Marys DHS | Allira Hayes | East Launceston |
Bec Barker | Trevallyn | Carol Roberts | Longford |
Amanda Horkings | Trevallyn
Ros Faulkner | Punchbowl
We are still to confirm some placements for our temporary staff.
Rebecca Chandler & Grace Evorall will continue in their current AST roles for 2021. |
If you would like to take up the opportunity to provide any information that may support placement of students into classes for 2021, and haven't already done so, please email this to the school email address - norwood.primary@education.tas.gov.au - by October 26th with the title "2021 Student Information"in the subject line.
Please be aware that requests for particular teachers are not taken into account, rather the focus should be on educational and\or social emotional information. If you have something that you would like to talk with me personally about, please contact the school office for an appointment.

Congratulations to the following students who received a Principal Award Certificate at the end of last term. The teachers have chosen four students from their class who continually focus hard on their learning, meet learning challenges with determination and resilience and focus on learning in a way that stretches their own learning and contributes to a classroom environment that supports all learners. This has certainly been a hard choice for our teachers!

Our annual program for children in grades 3-5 is approaching and will be held at the Hagley Swimming Pool.
Please remember to have your child equipped with the appropriate attire and prepared to swim on day one. I strongly encourage all students involved to fully commit to attending this compulsory swimming, life-saving and fitness - developing program.
Grade 3-4 Hill and 3 Glen are to wear their bathers under their school uniform. This is in line with COVID-19 use of the change rooms at the pool.
Every day counts! Being confident in and around aquatic environments is a very important life skill.
You will need: Bathers, Towel, Plastic bag (for wet bathers, towel etc.), Goggles (can be taken but will be used sparingly during the program), School jumper - to put on when leaving the pool.
Please remember that if your child regularly accesses the canteen on Thursdays and Fridays, the above timetable may have an effect on recess and lunchtime ordering. These times include travel times, so they are the times that students will be off site.
To follow with COVID-19 guidelines, no spectators will be able to attend. Students will not have PE during this fortnight.

We are very excited to announce that one of our grade 6 students, Levi, has made it into the final three for the Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize Competition for his short video exploring the “Leidenfrost effect”. Levi made the short video earlier in the year during COVID, as he has a very keen interest in the area of Science. The Leidenfrost effect is when water droplets hit a surface that is about 270 degrees and as it evaporates, the steam becomes an insulator.
Levi will find out whether he is successful in late November, but no matter what we are so proud of him and all that he has achieved. As a part of the competition, Levi is getting to have a video link session with Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, who is well known for his books and work on TV and radio.
At Norwood Levi has been involved in many additional learning opportunities, including the Maths Olympiad Group, F1 In Schools and Socrates Café through online learning.
Congratulations on your nomination and outstanding work Levi.
We have used dye wash and soft pastel to create these gorgeous pictures of 'Morphing Murphy'.
This year Norwood, as a part of our Extension programs with Mr Walker, have participated in the F1 In Schools State Finals. Fourteen grade 5/6 students have worked with Mr Djakic from Queechy High School and Mr Walker to design and build balsa wood F1 cars. As a part of their work, they had to also present their learning about aerodynamics and optimal ways to reduce drag through large posters and one group even had to make two short videos.
This is our first year as a school participating in the competition, with three Cadet Teams and one Development team. The Development team competes against high school teams from Tasmania, and we are the first primary school to ever enter this catagory.
In addition to their learning about aerodynamics, more importantly they had to learn about time management, goal setting, completing tasks through collaboration and the importance of resilience. All the teams spent time at Queechy HS with Mr Djakic through the holidays and after school to get their cars made.
No matter what the result, I am sure they will all agree that they have learnt so much, both about F1 cars, and themselves.

After much deliberation we are pleased to announce that we will be holding a 5/6 Swimming Carnival in 2020. As you know, 2020 has led to the cancellation of many sporting activities due to COVID-19.
Due to a number of factors this year’s Swimming Carnival will be optional for our Grade 5/6 Students. Students who do not wish to compete, or are not capable of the required distance, will stay at school.
Students who would like to participate are required to complete the permission section on the letter that has been sent home this week.
Thank you!

URGENT - Mother’s Day Stall 2021
We are looking for someone to take up the exciting role of Mother’s Day Stall Coordinator. We are always looking for new faces to come on board and you will receive help from an incredibly supportive committee.
Providing Mother’s and Father’s Day stalls to our children rely on parents’ involvement and volunteers. Without this help, these stalls cannot go ahead.
If you are interested or would like more information, please contact us via FB message or email on norwoodpsa@email.com
The School Association’s next meeting is 10th November, if we have not had any interest in this position by then unfortunately, we will have to cancel the stall for 2021.
Norwood Primary School Association Executive 2021/2022
The School Association are starting to look ahead to 2021/2022. At our AGM in March all Executive positions will be vacant, these include Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer.
We would love people to start thinking about if this is something that interests them and we would welcome any new faces to these positions.
We currently hold our meetings on a Tuesday night, but this could be changed to a day meeting if that would suit the new executive and potential new members better, anything is possible!
If you have any further questions regarding these positions or our meetings please contact us on norwoodpsa@gmail.com or via our FB page.
