Spring is back and so are hats! Throughout the next couple of weeks we will be directing children to begin wearing hats at play times and for outside actiivties. Students are welcome to continue to wear any Norwood PS hat they have, but for anyone needing a new hat, our new look NPS hats are available at Midford in Charles Street and the school office has limited stock available. Cost - $12.00.
Please note that football and decorative beanies and caps are not to be worn at school, unless part of a individual support plan for a very few students. Students will be asked to remove any hats that do not meet the Updated NPS Uniform Policy approved by our School Association.
Please take a look at the uniform policy for all acceptable uniform items.
GaGa PIT
Our newly built Primary GaGa Pit has been extremely well received by students. For most, this has been a new game to learn which means some give and take and lots of sharing! But, wow, what a great job everyone is doing!
SOCIAL MEDIA Safety
We are aware that there are occasions when social media can place the wellbeing of our young people at risk. When this occurs, it is important we follow the advice of the eSafety Commissioner.
-
The Office of the eSafety Commissioner encourages parents and carers to co-view, co-play, and ask questions about the games, and apps their children are using; and let them know you are there to support them if they are upset or uncomfortable about anything they see online.
- The Office of the eSafety Commissioner’s website has a section specifically for parents which you are encouraged to visit for further information. It does include advice on supporting teenagers should they encounter content that is upsetting, disturbing or offensive.
https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents
We also encourage people who encounter such content to report it to the social media platform they’ve seen it on, or to eSafety at www.esafety.gov.au/report/illegal-harmful-content
As parents/carers, if you become aware that your child/ren have viewed inappropriate or disturbing content and are concerned about their wellbeing, please contact the school for support.
Karen
Forward planning for the 2021 school year has begun. In order for us to make the best decisions possible, it is important to let us know if your child/ren will NOT be returning to NPS next year so please either call (6344 2533)or email norwood.primary@education.tas.gov.au if this is the case.
Thank you!
A reminder to families NOT to use the car park when dropping off and picking up students at the beginning and end of the day, our carpark is for staff, visitors and Disability Permit holders ONLY. Families are to park in the surrounding streets or use the drop off zone at the front of the school - remember the drop off zone is STRICTLY NO PARKING.
The Tasmanian Government has commenced a review on the governance framework for the three statutory entities that regulate education in Tasmania - the Office of the Education Registrar, the Office of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification, and the Teachers Registration Board.
These entities provide critical education regulatory oversight and support services.
What they do impacts:
- the quality of the teaching that learners experience
- how learning is assessed and recognised
- the quality and safety of our learning environments
- the extent to which students are participating and engaged in learning pathways that are right for them.
A Steering Committee, including representatives from all three education sectors (government, catholic and independent) has been set up to guide the Review.
They are seeking community input into the review through the release of a Discussion Paper. Your feedback is invaluable to ensuring broad community views are captured and reflected in a future governance framework for education in Tasmania.
For further information and to view the Discussion Paper please visit https://www.education.tas.gov.au/about-us/legislation/review-of-education-regulation
Responses to the Discussion Paper close on 4 October 2020.
This year as part of our CBCA Book Week celebrations we will once again be having a Dress Up day based around this year's theme of CURIOUS CREATURES, WILD MINES.
When: Tuesday 20th October
Weather permitting, we will be having the formal 'viewing | sharing' of costumes outdoors. Keep a watch for any further information.
Early Childhood Cross Country Carnival
Last week was Cross Country week here at Norwood Primary School. The Early Childhood Carnival was held on Monday afternoon. We had 2 of our Kinder classes (House & Williams), as well as all our Prep-Grade 2s run on a great day for running. With plenty of practice in PE, excitement had been building towards the big day. In our Cross Country, Kinders and Preps ran 500m, Grade 1 800m and Grade 2 1km. I congratulate all participants on their great effort and thank our Grade 6 helpers for their support on the day. Even without support from parents and friends, the atmosphere around the carnival was excellent as many runners did an excellent job around their tracks.
Hopefully the abundance of photos on our Facebook page made up for some of the disappointment of parents and friends being unable to attend due to COVID-19 protocols. We do not normally share the top runners in our EC carnival, but without spectators at the Cross Country we will do this year. The following students ran well in their race and finished in the top 3 for their event.
Prep Girls: Kelsey M, Annie B, Imogen R
Prep Boys: Lenny B, Olllie G, Chaston K
Grade 1 Girls: Ruby M, Zoe W, Ruby L
Grade 1 Boys: Bente D, Ned F, Flynn M
Grade 2 Girls: Isabelle F, Larnie B, Josephine K
Grade 2 Boys: Cooper C, Reuben M, Wyl G
Primary Cross Country Carnival
Wednesday was our 3-6 Carnival as well as Kinder Leedham. With plenty of training occurring in both PE and Daily PE, it was clear in each race that there were plenty of keen athletes looking to push themselves to get the best result possible. As with the Monday carnival, the excitement and house enthusiasm led to a great atmosphere around the start and finish lines. In Grade 3-6, the top 6 runners from each race are selected to represent Norwood at the LSSSA Cross Country event racing against the best endurance runners in Launceston. In our Cross Country, Grade 3s complete a 1km track, Grade 4s 1.5km, Grade 5s 2km and Grade 6s 2.5 km. These distances are very similar to what is completed at the LSSSA event next Tuesday.
In terms of the house competition, Banksia took an early lead after the Grade 3/4 events and kept the gap to Wattle and Waratah extending throughout the day to finish as winners on 151 points. Wattle finished 2nd on 126 points and Waratah in 3rd on 117.
Special congratulations to those students who have been selected for the LSSSA Cross Country Carnival for finishing in the top 6 of their race.
LSSSA Cross Country Carnival
Norwood will be competing in the LSSSA Cross Country Carnival next Tuesday the 15th of September. Students have been selected based upon their good efforts at our recent Cross Country Carnival. Have you lost a jumper, coat, container or even a bag? Our Lost Property Basket is overflowing with unnamed items. Please check to see if anything belongs to you! If you have lost any of our new clothing items ask at the office. PLEASE name all your uniform items as it helps us to return them to their owners! Thank you!
As climate changes and the UV rays strengthen we are being reminded that a UV rating of 3 or above requires protection. The recommendation is for hats to be worn in September, right through until the end of April. This is not neatly Term 1 and 4 as it was previously. The policy can be viewed below. We ask that students start wearing hats when outside. Thank you for your support in this matter.
Our new school hats can be purchased from Midford in Charles Street or we have limited stock at the School Office. Cost is $12.00.

As a part of our school extension programs, two of our students, William H and James H participated in the NCSS Challenge. The NCSS Challenge is a competition for school students run by the Australian Computing Academy at the University of Sydney. It involves 5 weeks of coding tasks, which get harder each week.
William achieved a merit in the Beginners category and James achieved a perfect score in the Beginners Blockly challenge. Congratulations to them on their excellent achievements.
