A few updates.....
I feel so very privileged to live in our wonderful state of Tasmania where we have managed so well to keep the spread of COVID-19 at bay. This has taken a lot of diligence, and for many has greatly tested our resilience.
Although we are in a position where Public Health have been able to ease some restrictions in regards to groups of adults entering schools etc., it is still important that we adhere to the guidelines to keep everyone healthy and safe. The school continues to follow all Public Safety guidelines in regards to thorough cleaning procedures and handwashing.
A few other areas to be aware of are.....
- Assemblies: at present we are continuing with student | teacher assemblies split into various grade levels.....given the size of our space there are no whole school assemblies at present. We are hoping to review the situation for term 4 to possibly invite families to join us for the last term of the year...this will be dependent on Public Health regulations & guidelines.
- Events (eg.Cross Country): given the size of our school, management on extra adults entering the school site is not feasible at this point. Where possible the events will be held with students and school staff until further notice. We may call for a small number of volunteers if absolutely necessary to hold the event safely.
- Excursions: we have started to work on re-instating excursions as part of our learning programs, however, there are specific guidelines for each venue we attend that we are required to adhere to. Part of this is generally in relation to the amount of adults that can attend. We may at times call for one or two volunteers, however, for the foreseeable future we will not be able to open up excursion attendance to all parents / carers interested in attending.
- Sickness: please continue to be vigilant in relation to your childs sickness. There are times in winter when many children have mild coughs and clear runny noses for extended times and are still okay to attend school, however, in present times we need to be vigilant and ask that children are kept home at least for a long enough period to ensure that their illness may not be potentially COVID-19 related. If your child is presenting with ongoing colds extra, please make an appointment to discuss this with your family doctor, and request a medical certificate explaining that there are ongoing absences from school due to some continual medical problems as this will then be noted in our system and stop Department of Education low attendance alerts. Letters are now required to be sent out for students who have regular low attendance without sufficient documentation to explain.
- Toys: Please be aware that we do not encourage children to bring toys from home on a regular basis (with exception of those toys that form part of the adjustments within an individual learning plan). At present, we need to discourage the sharing of items from outside of the school. Also, we cannot take responsibility for the loss of, or breakage of toys brought in from home, therefore they are generally best left for home use.
Sharing of food:
We are no longer accepting food items of any kind for birthdays. This has become increasingly difficult to monitor in relation to food intolerances and allergies. It may simply appear to be a small treat, however, in each classroom this can potentially occur approximately 25 times across the year. Teachers always highlight students’ birthdays and their peers are exceptionally good at contributing towards individual's birthdays being a special day! We hope that each child having a birthday on a school day finishes the day feeling that there has been a sense of having some special attention towards them.
Bush reserve
The Launceston City Council have been working hard over the past couple of weeks to clean up the Council Bush Reserve area attached to our play areas. This has been in response to some concerns raised from residents in relation to the area becoming unsafe. Many old tree limbs etc. and a large amount of 'people developed' bike jumps etc. have been levelled off to make for a safer walking area.
CBCA BOOK WEEK 2020
As with many events, there have been some changes to Book Week this year...namely the date! This year Book Week will be celebrated in October. We have organised for Tuesday 20th October for Dress Up Day. We will need to make some adjustments from previous years in regards to the organisation of this so please watch out for further information to come. This year the theme is CURIOUS CREATURES, WILD MINES.

City Mission Support
Hi, this is Eleni and Grace from Grade 6 Richards. For our Excel Challenge we are collecting canned foods, women’s needs, toiletries, beanies, scarves, thick socks (new), hand warmers (new), packet food and bottles of water. Eleni’s mum works for Missiondale and we will deliver any donations to City Mission in Week 9. All donations would be great. Thanks for helping.

Hopefully, your children are beginning to talk about the ‘zones’. We are moving to this method of supporting our students with their emotional regulation. Kindergarten children continue to learn about feelings and regulation through MyTern while our other students are applying their understanding to Zones of Regulation. We are finding that the tools and concepts are working very successfully with our older students and that the two approaches are complimentary of each other. Try asking them ‘which zone do you think you are in now?’ and see what they say.
So what is it?
- The core focus of Zones is to positively support the acquisition of self-regulation skills where our students are supported to manage all the feelings that they are experiencing.
- There are 4 zones of colour to reflect different states of emotional levels.
- It is a safe non-judgmental way to recognize and communicate how they are feeling.
- Once a student identifies the colour they are in, they are able utilise tools to navigate between zones.
- Green is “good to go”
- Yellow is “caution”
- Red is “stop and regain control”
- Blue is “need to recharge”
Important Points:
- There are no “bad” zones. Instead:
- everyone experiences all of the zones at one time or another
- we will teach students to figure out what zone they are in and what tools they can use to regulate and move between zones.
- While the green zone is optimal, it is ok for students to remain in the yellow and blue zone if they are not ready to move to the green zone. At this stage, we validate their feelings and help them use tools to maintain where they are while still performing required tasks.
The NPS Cross Country will be held on Monday 31st August for Kinder - Grade 2 and Wednesday 2nd September for Kinder Leedham and Grade 3-6 weather permitting.
All students will run a school based track. If the Cross Country needs to be cancelled we will put a message on our Facebook page and send a text message to parents.
All students to wear their PE uniform, bring a spare pair of shoes and socks and an extra large drink of water.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID-19 restrictions spectators will not be permitted to attend. Thank you for your understanding.

The yo-yo craze hit hard, if only briefly. Over 250 items were sold and the assembly messages from the NED presentation were timely. We were reminded to grow our brain and be willing to tackle new learning.
New strings for yo-yo's can be purchased from the front office at 50c per string.

All children in Tasmanian Government schools, from grade 4 to 10 will have an opportunity to share their thoughts around well being.
On-line surveys will be conducted with classes during the next fortnight - mainly during the HPE lessons.
Question examples are:
- Are you a cheerful person?
- How well do you get along with your teachers?
- How often do you exercise?
- Do you get a good nights sleep?
Answers are confidential - but will provide trends around our youth, which will inform both government and schools.

The Student Parliament have approved the construction of this addition to the playground. Mr Humphrey will begin to share the pit and the rules with students as from Thursday. It looks exciting! It is located at the bush end of the top oval. It is a variation on a dodgeball game and we will roster its usage. Happy Ga-Ga-ing!

Term 3 School Association Report
As we are well and truly past the halfway mark of the year, we thought we should let you know what we have been up to. This year has been interesting to say the least and has definitely thrown us some curve balls. As a group we feel so fortunate that we were able to provide our school community with a fair earlier in the year, as one of the last times we could all come together. We are excited that at our next meeting the committee will be voting on how we are going to spend the money raised after the school has provided us with some great ideas. Watch this space for some exciting developments!
Not sure if you have noticed the recently constructed, Ga Ga pit up next to the top oval, we hope this is something that all grades will enjoy. The Ga Ga pit was supported by the School Association fundraising last year.
Have you checked out the new Uniform Items? These new items have been in the planning process for over 18 months and to see them come to life on the students is a testament to the School Association and the Senior Staff’s commitment in making it a reality. We are really happy with how they have come up and we hope you are too.
All Schools Triathlon – Unfortunately due to Covid-19 this years Triathlon will not be going ahead. Such a shame after we have been building a larger team each year.
Let’s enjoy the last 5 weeks of Term 3!
Ben, Savanna, Chantal, Sarah and The Norwood Primary School Association.
