Dear NPS Families
Planning for 2026
We are well under way with our planning for 2026 with most staffing close to being finalised. We expect to have the majority of our staffing confirmed by mid Term 4. At this stage with our student numbers more even across year groups, we plan to move to mostly straight year level classes. I will provide more information about the 2026 class structure during Term 4.
Staff work collaboratively to make decisions regarding student class placement, making decisions by bringing together all the information available to create the best possible learning environments for all students with a balance of academic, social and emotional needs and application to learning. Whilst we understand that having supportive relationships with peers within each class is very important for students, having one's best friend is not always the best approach or possible.
Early next term we will send out a link via email that can be used if you have additional information about your child which is unknown to the school that you would like to share with us. If you have anything that you would prefer to share in person rather than in the web form, please contact the school office to make a time to meet with either myself, Jess Bennett or Scott Driessen (Student Support Leader).
Please note requests for individual teachers will not be considered.
If your child will not be returning to Norwood Primary School next year, please advise us as soon as possible via email to norwood.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au
Best wishes to everyone for a wonderful term break, and hopefully an end to all the nasty viruses that have been rather constant this Term.
Kind regards,
Karen Monaghan | Principal

In our recent cyber safety sessions with Nurse Bri, we’ve been learning how to stay safe online by making smart choices and protecting our personal information. We explored ways to keep our passwords secure, avoid sharing private details, and recognise unsafe websites or messages, and deidentifying out usernames. Nurse Bri helped us understand why confidentiality is important and how being careful online helps keep us safe. This has been a valuable classroom reminder that our digital footprint matters!

On Wednesday 9th September 29 Grade 5/6 students who are a part of our STEM Racing program visited Queechy High School for their “STEM Showcase”. The students had the opportunity to race their test cars on the racetrack to check what changes they will need to make before the state final in November. Whilst there they also got to explore different STEM activities including Lego building challenges, and the Queechy STEM Racing students displays. Thank you to Queechy for hosting us, we all had a fantastic time!

On Sunday two teams of 4 students from the 5/6 Maths Extension Group participated in the Maths Association of Tasmania Northern Tasmanian Maths Relays. The teams had to try and solve 20 difficult questions in 45 minutes and both teams thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and represented the school admirably. Thank you to Mrs Ralston for helping to score on the day.

In Grade 1-2 Wellbeing lessons, we have had many previous lessons about small and big problems. We have also discussed ‘worries’ and how different worries, require different actions (some worries are part of everyday life, some worries are for adults and other worries, we can talk about and seek ways to help with these). As a culminating experience, we made ‘worry bags’, where the children were encouraged to write down their worries, as this is one method that can assist with helping ease their worries.
The past two weeks, across Grades 1-4, we have continued to explore downregulating. This has been through our mindfulness sessions at the beginning of each lesson (Smiling Minds is our mindfulness app), and we have then used art therapy as a way of focusing our thoughts and calming our minds and bodies. Mandalas have been our form of therapy. These are used as a medium to assist downregulating by the repetitive nature, and small focus it requires. This has been such a beautiful experience across all classes, with a quiet calmness across the classrooms as we focus on the process, not the end point.

When human beings get limbic and emotional, sometimes the right words do not come out of our mouths. Storing responses that are appropriate can be immensely helpful when emotions get heightened. As part of supporting students to respond appropriately in a range of situations, we have been working with them to develop stored responses. Supporting our children, and ourselves as adults to build these responses in our heads helps us to manage our emotions. Read and watch about how you can use stored responses through the Parent Partner Portal for Real Schools. Stored Responses | Parent Portal | Real Schools
