Dear NPS Families
It has been wonderful to see so many families coming in to meet with class teachers to discuss student progress based on their mid-year reports.
We would love to have all our families take up this opportunity so if you haven't already done so, please contact the school office to book a time. If you are unable to meet in person, you can always organise a phone conversation or email teachers with any questions you may have. Please be aware that emails may take a day or so for the teachers to answer.
Year 5-6 3-day Excursion/Activities
In the following weeks, I will be organising for feedback from our year 5-6 students & teachers in relation to last weeks events. By all accounts the students were incredibly respectful, responsible and very courageous at times. Many of them certainly tested themselves to move out of their comfort zones (as did some teachers, I hear!). We are extremely proud of the way all students represented Norwood Primary during the events outside of the school environment. Well done to all involved!
Social Media
As previously mentioned, I have been working with the School Association investigating current research and advice in relation to children and the world of the internet, in particular, Social Media.
We are now in the process of purchasing a subscription to Dr Justin Coulson's site which will involve live webinars for both staff and families, along with a range of Professional Learning. Many thanks to our NPS School Association for supporting this with funding for the subscription.
We will also continue to access other up-to-date research from more areas. Below is a link with some information in relation to social media from the Raising Children website.
The key points referenced in this information are....
- Social media is a big part of social and creative life for many pre-teens and teenagers.
- Social media benefits include connection, learning and creativity.
- Risks include exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and privacy and data breaches.
- Written guidelines can help pre-teens and teenagers get benefits while using social media responsibly, respectfully and safely.
This is certainly well worth taking a look at as it is very informative and an easy read.

Value Certificate Recipients
It was fantastic to acknowledge students across the school in week 6, who were deserving recipients of Values Certificates. These certificates highlighted those students who have displayed exceptional behaviour, an outstanding approach to learning and academic excellence. Congratulations to all recipients.

Prep A
Prep Dahl have been researchers and have investigated which materials are best for making a boat.
We carried out several experiments to see which materials can float, which ones are waterproof, and which ones can be bent or cut.
We had a lot of fun making our boats and testing whether they would float on the water!
5/6 - 3 Day Excursion
Last week all our grade 5/6 students were lucky enough to embark on an exhilarating excursion to some super awesome places including Hollybank Treetops, Trevallyn Hoo Hoo Hut, Launceston Lanes and Riverbend park.
We spent a day at Hollybank exploring 4 different treetops courses, everyone had an amazing time testing their fear of heights up in the trees.
Another day we visited Trevallyn Park, Launceston Lanes and Riverbend park. At Trevallyn we played a survival game together around the bush area. At bowling we split into groups of 5 or 6 and played a game of bowling together, sadly neither of us won our games! Lastly we visited Riverbend Park and enjoyed a snag in bread cooked by "Golden Tongs" (Mr Driessen).
On Friday, we spent the day at school and split into our excursion groups. The entire day was full of fun activities, these included an intriguing scavenger hunt where we had to find riddles and solve them and we played the survival game we had played at Trevallyn again. Everyone completed a 'Blooket' and all groups enjoyed playing a couple of games of skittles in the hall.

Last term, 8 students from 5/6 attended the Tasmanian Youth Climate Leaders Conference. We learnt about how changes in climate affect the world. We also learnt about how our decisions affect the world and that we can make a difference.
As part of our plan at Norwood, this year we will be hosting a National Tree Day Event on Friday 26th July. We are seeking volunteers to help us, along with a number of other students from throughout the school to help us plant on this day. We will have equipment, we just need your assistance with the digging and planting!!
Our planned space for this years event is the bank next to the down ball courts, allowing us to reduce soil erosion and beautify the space. We are planning on planting well over 100 plants on the day!
If you are able to help, and you have a Working with Vulnerable Childrens Card and have completed the online Volunteers Safeguarding Training, can you please contact Mr Walker or the school office.

Yesterday, was the All Schools Cross Counrty Carnival at Symmons Plains. We had 45 young athletes participate in the event and there were 200 plus students per race.
As always the encouragement of our NPS students was excellent.
Special congratulations for Chloe A who managed a 4th place finish, as well as Lenny B, Miah B and Yasamin J who managed to place in the top 20 finishers.
Well done to all our NPS Team!

Excitedly this year Norwood is again participating in the REA F1 In Schools Competition. This international competition involves the students working in teams of 3 to design, test and time trial mini formula 1 cars.
This is our 5th year participating and we have a number of former students now participating in the High School Competition, with some even going to the National Championships.
The competition will again be held in Launceston and we have 6 teams participating. For us to participate in this outstanding competition we are looking for sponsors for our car. The sponsorship cost is $300 dollars and we will put your company’s logo on the car and you will also get to keep a version of the car. For more information, please contact Duncan Walker or Nicole Moir at school for more information.
