Dear Families
Yes, it's that time of year again where we re-introduce hats to our uniform. Our navy bucket hats are to be worn during outside activities and play, beginning Monday next week through to end April 2024. See below for a picture of these.
OPEN AFTERNOON
Tomorrow (Thursday 31st August) 2:00-3:00pm & 3:30-4:30 we are welcoming families to come along and join children in their classroom and/or with their specialist teacher. During this time you will be able to interact with your children, and other students, to talk about some of the work that they are currently working on or have concluded.
P-4 student will have an Evidence of Learning piece of work for you to discuss with them and to take away with you. If you are unable to attend this will be sent home. Our 5-6 students are currently mid-way through a sequence of learning within the area of Geography. Students will show and discuss this work and an assessment Rubric will be sent at the completion of this sequence.
Parent / Teacher Discussions - 3-4A
Mr Michael Trotman will be conducting Parent/Teacher Discussions during weeks 9 & 10 as these were not conducted during the change over of teacher. An email with a booking link will be sent to this class this week.
Swimming and Water Safety Program (SWSP)
Our annual SWSP for grades 3, 4 & 5 will run over weeks 7 & 8 (starting next week). This is an important part of each child's education, so we ask that each child attends all sessions unless they are unwell.
Children also use a lot of extra energy during this program and often tend to get quite tired so early nights, a good night's sleep and an adequate breakfast for energy levels is extra important during this time.
Kind regards, Karen
1-2 Hayes have begun an Inquiry around Celestial Objects. For their Pre-Inquiry Assessment they created collages to show their thinking of what can be found in the Day and Night Sky.
We are excited to open our new outdoor learning space this week! This area will be accessible for all classes to use and enjoy.
Last week, Norwood celebrated our love of reading by enjoying a special week of Book Week festivities. Some of our 5/6 students had the privilege of listening to local author Claire Van Ryn discuss the process of becoming a published author. We had the Write a Book in a Day challenge on Monday, with twenty enthusiastic writers and illustrators collaborating to create four beautiful stories. There were lunchtimes activities, buddy class catch ups, a ‘choose your favourite shortlisted book’ competition, and on Thursday the whole school joined for our dress up parade. What a wonderful week it was celebrating all things reading!
All students in Grade 1/2 were fortunate to attend Science Week at QVMAG Inveresk. It was an amazing day filled with hands on activities and raised many questions about space which we are looking to explore further in our Inquiry.
Courage
Our classes throughout our school are working incredibly hard to unpack our value of Courage and what it means for them. This will continue to be an explicit focus for us during Term 3.
Why Courage?
Courage is not a common value for schools and can mean many different things to different people. We show courage at Norwood Primary School by:
- accepting challenges and embracing opportunities
- Taking responsibility for our own learning and behaviour
- Being brave and not giving up
- Asking for help when we need it
- having difficult conversations (including when people’s behaviour does not reflect with our values)
- Including others
Courage is not necessarily loud, but is sometimes quiet and thoughtful and can relate to any area of life. By embedding this value in the culture of our school, we model the behaviours we encourage in our learners.
As part of our celebration of our Values, we will be awarding those students who have consistently displayed and modelled the Courage behaviours of our Expected Student Behaviour. Students who are recognised for displaying Courage, will be presented with a Courage badge, which they can wear every day. These badges will be presented to students in a whole school assembly later this Term. For parents/guardians of these students, please keep an eye out for an invitation to be a part of this assembly to recognise those students who go above and beyond.

Please ensure your child/ren are suitably prepared for the pool with their bathers, towel, goggles (can be worn at certain stages in the program), warm school clothes as well as an extra plastic bag for wet clothes. Swimming caps are provided by the school for all students.
The SWSP is a crucial part of HPE curriculum and an excellent opportunity for all students to improve their swimming skills, boat safety knowledge as well as overall confidence in aquatic environments. The program is beneficial for all students, no matter their previous experience in the pool.
The Annual Consent Form for Aquatic (water-based) Activities was completed at the start of 2023. If you would like to update any details on this form please let the Office know.
Every day at the pool with our Swimming teachers makes a difference!
Grade 3-4 A are permitted to wear their bathers under their school uniform. All other classes must come to school in normal school uniform and will get changed at the pool.
PLEASE NOTE: 3-4 B and 5's from 5-6 C and 5-6 D will be unable to order lunch from the school canteen.
Any questions about the SWSP should be directed to the school office.

Transitioning from primary to high school is a time full of fun, excitement and new experiences, but it can also be challenging or worrying for many students and their families. Norwood Primary School are fortunate to be able to collaborate with local high schools in order to make this process a smooth one. Coming up in Week 9 of this Term, Kings Meadows High School’s transition team will be returning to NPS for an Expo afternoon, enabling our students to have an experience of what a school day will look like in 2024. For those attending Queechy High School, we will be heading over to the campus on Wednesday September 13th for a second visit. This will involve a school mapping exercise run by the QHS Transition Leaders.
On September 19th or 21st Queechy High School will be hosting Parent Information Sessions between 7:00pm – 8:00pm. Parents are able to attend on either night and do not need to RSVP. We are hoping to have hard copy invitations asap.
Our local schools are aiming to assist students and their families by making sure every child is prepared and feels supported in their choice for high school learning in 2024. Over the coming weeks, identified students will be taking part in some extra transition activities. The purpose of these experiences is to expose students to high school life and the opportunity to visit the campus and be introduced to both staff and students at the school. The goal of a successful transition program is to increase students connectedness to their Year 7 high school, whilst fostering engagement through introductory experiences.
If you have any questions or concerns with transition, please contact the NPS office.
The wellbeing of our students is important to us - we want to hear how students feel, and think, about different things going on in their lives.
Those in Years 4–6 at Norwood Primary School will be taking part in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. The results from this survey will help us get a picture of the current wellbeing of our students, and what we can do to improve future wellbeing for learning. The more students who take part, the clearer our picture will be.
The Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy .
The details for the survey are:
When: 28/8/2023 – 22/09/2023
Who: Years 4 - 6
What do I need to do:
You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Year 4- 6 students, including a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact Luke Padgett at the school.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
