Welcome back to Term 3 to all Norwood Primary School families! It has been wonderful to see so many eager and enthusiastic students back at school ready for a new term of learning. A big welcome to Mr Michael Trotman who has joined our 3/4 team this term. We have also welcomed new teacher assistants Skye, Maddy and Brandon.
Our 1/2 classes were lucky enough to start the term with an excursion to various sites around Launceston. This was the culmination of their inquiry into Evolving Environments. A fantastic (if somewhat cold!) day was enjoyed by all. Thank you to our 1/2 team for all the hard work you put in to ensure the day was able to run smoothly.
We have had over 20 families visit our school in the first week of term to join in with one or more of our Launching into Learning programs. We are incredibly lucky at NPS to be able to offer an amazing variety of Launching into Learning programs including Chat and Climb, Little Readers, Music Mates and Little Joeys as well as our two pre-Kinder groups. In term 3 we have an exciting, new (and very cute) program beginning- Tiny Joeys which is aimed at children from birth to 12 months old. Times for all programs are advertised further on in the newsletter.
A dedicated group of 5/6 students have begun rehearsing for Dance Fever. Dance Fever is a dance event organised by Launceston College that offers opportunities for year 5/6 students to be part of a performance at the Door of Hope towards the end of year. Students are looking forward to working with our Dance Fever tutor to learn the dances they will be part of during the event. We can’t wait to watch them perform!
Kinder to year 2 classes have been lucky enough to be part of the Bravehearts Ditto program at the beginning of this week. Bravehearts visit schools around Australia to share messages around personal safety and the importance of telling a trusted adult if something is worrying you. Students will further explore these topics later in the term as part of the Early Childhood Wellbeing Program.
Families of students in years 3 and 5 who completed NAPLAN testing this year will have results sent home in the next week. NAPLAN testing occurs every year Australia wide and involves students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9. When looking at these results, please remember that they are based on one test on one day and do not always provide a full picture of where your child sits overall in their learning. Please contact the school office if you would like to discuss your child’s results further.
On Friday August 11 Student Parliament will be asking students to bring a gold coin donation and wear red in recognition of Red Nose Day which raises awareness of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Our focus value across the school for Term 3 is Courage. Classes will be unpacking what Courage means and ways that we can show Courage at NPS. We look forward to celebrating the successes of students in this area throughout the term.

Book Week falls in Week 5 of this term. This year, the theme is ‘Read, Grow, Inspire’.
The Literacy Leaders are busy organising events for the week, one of which will be our character dress up day. Students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character, or as a character that fits with this year’s theme. Is there a character that has inspired you in some way? Is there a particular book that motivated you to grow your reading?
The date for dress up is: Thursday 24th August.
There will be more information closer to the date regarding our costume parade, which parents are welcome to attend.

Grades 3-5 and invited Grade 6's
Starts Monday 4th September - Finishes on Friday 15th September.
The SWSP is a crucial part of HPE curriculum and an excellent opportunity for all students to improve their swimming skills, boat safety knowledge as well as overall confidence in aquatic environments. The program is beneficial for all students, no matter their previous experience in the pool.
The Annual Consent Form for Aquatic (water-based) Activities was completed at the start of 2023. If you would like to update any details on this form please let the Office know.

Norwood will be “turning red” on Friday 11th August as a fundraiser for Red Nose Day. Students are asked to wear red and bring a gold coin donation.
Funds raised on Red Nose Day over the last 30 years have resulted in an incredible 80 per cent reduction in sudden infant deaths.
Every dollar raised on Red Nose Day directly funds our 24/7 support services for grief-stricken families, and our education program for new parents to help them keep their babies safe.
Funds also support investment in research to further determine the causes of SIDS and stillbirth, and what can be done to prevent these tragedies from happening.
Early Childhood Wellbeing Program
The Early Childhood Wellbeing Program for Term 3 starts in week 2. Our focus to begin the term will be on respect. Respect is one of our values at Norwood Primary School and in all DECYP schools. We will remind ourselves of the ways that we can be respectful to ourselves and to other people around us.
We are in the process of organising teams for the upcoming Basketball Tournaments. Forms need to be returned to the office by this Friday 4th August to ensure your spot!

Are you making every school day count?
It’s Term 3 already – welcome back for another term!
As we move through the school year, sometimes regular school attendance can be challenging.
It’s important your child keeps up good attendance habits though.
Going to school every day means your child has every chance to learn, and be around their friends and teachers. Every day adds up, to benefit your child now and in the future.
If you’re having trouble getting your child to school, please talk to us. We’ll listen to your situation, and help in any way we can.
If you’re looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.
Excitedly this year Norwood is again participating in the REA F1 In Schools Competition. This international competition involves the students working in teams of 3 to design, test and time trial mini formula 1 cars. Last year one of our teams won the State Final, which will again be held in Launceston at the end of Term 3. For us to participate in this outstanding competition we are looking for sponsors for our car. The sponsorship cost is $250, which is the cost of registration. We will put your companies logo on the car and you will also get to keep the car. For more information, please contact Duncan Walker or Nicole Moir at school for more information.
