March 15th
Dear families,
I hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful long weekend. I want to thank the Norwood community for a lovely warm welcome to the school. The students have been a delight to get to know. It has been an absolute pleasure getting into classrooms and seeing students engaged in learning.
This week our students in years 3 and 5 have begun the NAPLAN online assessments for Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, and Mathematics. It's important to reassure your children and yourselves that these tests represent a moment in time and teachers know your child/children's strengths, personal qualities, and creative skills which NAPLAN doesn’t assess. We are regularly encouraged by our student’s determination and resilience. If your child is at all nervous about NAPLAN please let their teacher know. Our Prep students continue to complete their beginning of year PAT EY testing, this provides valuable data around what students already know and what we will need to focus on throughout the year.
We look forward to our athletics carnival for students in years 3-6 on Thursday 16th which will be held at St Leonards Athletic Centre, a big thank you to Mr Humphrey for all the organisation that goes into running this event. We look forward to seeing family and friends supporting our students. I hope to meet a few more families on the day.
It has been fantastic to see so many families coming along to our LiL programs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. We are incredibly lucky to be able to offer such a variety of LiL programs including Little Joeys, Little Readers, Chat and Climb and Music Mates. In particular I extend a warm welcome to those families who are joining the Norwood Primary School community for the very first time.
SAFEGUARDING LEAD APPOINTED
Norwood Primary School has recently appointed Nita Cummings as our first Safeguarding Lead.
Safeguarding Leads have been appointed in all Tasmanian State Schools to help ensure all children and young people in Tasmania are known, safe, well and learning.
Nita will support the wellbeing of all our students and help us all understand that keeping children and young people safe is everyone’s responsibility.
Please support Nita in this new role!

Norwood Primary Athletics Carnival
Date: TOMORROW, Thursday, 16th March
Time: 9:30am-2:15pm
Venue: St Leonards Athletic Centre
The Grade 3-6 Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 16th March at the St Leonards Athletic Centre (rain day 20th March). This is our first carnival of the year and a great opportunity to display house spirit and our school values of Aspiration, Courage, Growth and Respect. Students have been preparing for the carnival in their PE Lessons.
Students will need to be at school by 8:55am, to allow prompt departure of buses just after 9:00am. All students need to ensure they are wearing appropriate clothing to participate in, hats, have plenty of food, bring a large drink bottle and sunscreen. All students will be under the shade of gazebos when not participating in events. Students are also encouraged to support their house by wearing ribbons, tops, zinc cream etc. of their house colours.
Wattle: Blue Waratah: Red Banksia: Green
Students with asthma are reminded to bring their puffers for the day.
This year’s carnival is slightly longer than in previous years to allow us to provide more opportunities for students to participate on the day.
Please note: NO RECESS OR LUNCH ORDERS AVAILABLE ON THIS DAY
Spectators are welcome to attend to support students, however they must stay in the designated spectator area. If you are unwell do not attend.
Students who are absent may still be selected to represent NPS in the LSSSA Athletics Carnival, based on times/distances recorded at school. This will be held on Wednesday 23rd March at the St Leonards Athletic Centre.

Prep-Grade 2 students are learning so much about the Zones in their weekly Wellbeing lessons! Over the last two weeks we have looked in detail at both the Blue Zone and the Green Zone and have talked about what we might see, hear or feel if we, or other people, are in these Zones.
We know that all emotions fit into a Zone and that all Zones are okay.
Have a chat with your child about what they know about the Blue and Green Zone!
Did you know that our Library offers Family Borrowing? Mrs Parkin will be in the Library to help with checking books in and out on Tuesday mornings at 9:00am.
It was wonderful to see 55 entries in our first NPS Brixhibition Competition. Judging will be extremely hard but we are lucky to have a member of Brixhibition helping us. Please collect your creations from the STEM room in the afternoon on Friday 17th March. The winners will be announced next week.
School photo day will be held Monday 27th of March, information was sent home with students last week.
