August 3rd
Welcome back to Term 3! You have probably noticed either in the news or even within your own circles that Tasmania, like other states, has been experiencing an increase in COVID cases over the past few weeks. This increase is expected to remain through to at least the end of August, compounded by other illnesses such as the flu. The health and safety of students and staff has, and always will be, our top priority. With increased COVID-19 cases in our community, our staff and visitors are strongly recommended to wear face masks when indoors, or if they are unable to physically distance. Students will be supported to wear masks when they choose to. Face masks and rapid antigen tests continue to be readily available for students and staff at Norwood Primary School. It is common to see increased illness at this time of year, so it remains important that we all continue with our COVID safe behaviours, stay at home if unwell and get tested. As always, when your child is well, the best place for them to be is at school learning with their friends and teachers. We will need to continue to be flexible during the Term. We will continually monitor the situation, make changes as necessary and keep school communities informed.
As emailed to you all yesterday, Karen has had to take some leave until August 30th. During this time I will be in the Acting Principal role and I thank Karen for her confidence in us as a team continuing the great work at Norwood Primary School. Our Leadership Group within our school will be ensuring continuity in teaching and learning and for there to be no disruption to this. As a school we are incredibly fortunate to have such a skilled team of teachers, teaching assistants and ancillary staff that are working with our students. Our entire staff, who work within an incredibly busy school, all show high levels of adaptability and can’t be thanked enough.
Pick up/Drop off Zone – Clarifying Use of the Zone
There are still a number of people who are leaving their cars or waiting in them when parking in the designated pick up/drop off zone at the beginning and end of the school day. It is up to all of us to respect the use of this space to ensure that it benefits all those who wish to use it.
During the times 8:30am-9:15am and 2:30pm-3:15pm, these parking spots are strictly a No Standing Zone which means you must only pull in and pick up or drop off from the designated area. Students are being asked to wait at the steps closest to the roundabout and access their 'pick up' from there. Please remember to keep moving up as cars leave so that cars are not lined up down the road waiting. This process works very well when everyone is being respectful and using this zone for its intention. Can we also please keep the driveway clear at all times.
If you wish to come in to the school to collect students at the end of the school day, you may use the regular street parking that is available surrounding the school.
Thank you in advance for helping us keep our students safe by following these processes.
Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
The wellbeing of our students is important to us - we want to hear how students feel, and think, about different things going on in their lives.
Those in Years 4, 5 and 6 at Norwood Primary School will be taking part in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. The results from this survey will help us get a picture of the current wellbeing of our students, and what we can do to improve future wellbeing for learning. The more students who take part, the clearer our picture will be.
The Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey is part of the Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy .
The details for the survey are:
When: 29th August 2022 and 23rd September 2022
Who: Years 4, 5 and 6.
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information will be sent home next week for all Year 4, 5 and 6 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact the school.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
Kind regards,
Luke

This year we are again participating in the F1 In Schools F1 Program. This amazing opportunity involves selected students working in teams of 3 to design miniature Formula 1 Cars, which are raced along a 20 metre track using CO² canisters as fuel. The teams must follow very strict guidelines and also record and share their learning through an A2 Poster. Teams will be racing against other students at the Tailrace Centre in late October. In 2021 we were the only primary school to participate in the state and the students found it very challenging, but also extremely rewarding.
This year, to support the ongoing running of the program at Norwood, we are seeking sponsors for our teams. Sponsors will have their name and logo on the cars and the poster. We are seeking sponsorship of $200 per team and ask that if you are interested, please contact either Duncan Walker or Nicole Moir at school. Thank you!
Year 6 Transition 2022-2023
Transitioning from primary to high school is a time full of fun, excitement and new experiences, but it can also be challenging or worrying for many students and their families. Norwood Primary School are fortunate to be able to collaborate with local high schools in order to make this process a smooth one. Our local schools are aiming to assist students and their families by making sure every child is prepared and feels supported in their choice for high school learning in 2023.
Coming up this Term we have further experiences available for those students who will be attending Queechy High School and Kings Meadows High School, plus those students who are still unsure. The purpose of both of these experiences is to increase students connectedness to their Year 7 high school, whilst fostering engagement through introductory experiences.
KMHS Challenge Day Thursday 25th August
Year 6 students will experience a sample of the teaching and learning programs, view the facilities and meet the staff while in the care of their Primary School teachers and TA’s. Experiencing social success will:
- assist students in the transition to Year 7;
- support students to understand the routines and school organisation; and
- provide students with an introductory experience of curriculum
QHS
There will be a follow up session held in week 6-8 designed to increase student familiarity with the school and a further opportunity to meet peers and teachers.
There will be more information to come around both of these sessions.
In the second half of term 2, students in 5/6 designed any object their imagination could think of as long as it was only made of 3D shapes. The students used Tinkercad, a free online 3D designing program and the following designs were selected as our top designs and are on our “Wall of Fame” in the Green Room.
