July 6th
Thank you to all families who have been able to make some time to talk with class teachers over the past two weeks. If you were not able to do this, please talk with your child's teacher about a good time to touch base with them. This could be done via phone, face-to-face or online video.
With the high amount of illness circulating at present, this term has seen our 'normal' attendance drop significantly. We understand that this has also had a huge impact on families with trying to shuffle work commitment etc. and also on children's learning and overall wellbeing. We are very hopeful that we see a decrease in the illnesses as we enter Term 3. Please ensure that you let us know when children are sick so that we can enter an 'explained absence' into the system. We may at times, after lengthy or many absences, be required to ask you to provide a medical certificate.
We wish all our students and their families a restful and healthy term break.
NAIDOC Week
This week we celebrate NAIDOC Week at NPS. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
Classes across the school have recognised NAIDOC week in a number of ways including sharing indigenous texts with buddy classes and guest readers, visiting the forest as a demonstration of connection to land and place, and for our older classes, participating in Gumnuts to Buttons with Miss Marshall. Huge thanks to Miss Marshall for sharing her knowledge and passion with our students.
At Norwood Primary we Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!
Kind regards, Karen
We are having a 'Plain Clothes Day' to benefit the City Mission Winter Appeal. When you donate to this appeal, you help provide meals, grocery supplies, food vouchers, clothing, and household goods to those in need. It also helps with utility bills and helping people stay warm this winter.
When: Friday 8th July
Cost: Gold coin donation
You may wear any type of clothing as long as it is appropriate for school and have covered shoulders and enclosed shoes.
Getting kids to school isn’t always easy. But being at school is the best place for our kids.
If your child is unwell, they need to stay home. But if your child is well enough to attend school, they should be at school. Every day, Monday to Friday.
Reality of missing school
Data shows us that regular school attendance is one of the best things a child can do to set them up for success. But if they don’t attend, things get harder for them.
Let’s do the maths:
- If your child misses even just one day a fortnight, that adds up to 20 days of the school year. That’s the same as missing four whole weeks of school!
- If they miss one day a week, that doubles to eight weeks of school they’ll never get back.
- Over the course of their childhood, that equals two and a half years of vital education they’ll never receive…
We mean it, every school day counts. It all adds up.
Bright futures begin at school
The data also tells us something else: the better a child’s attendance rate, the better off they’ll be. Their future will be filled with more opportunities.
School is where they learn and grow alongside their friends, and where they benefit the most. Going to school not only promotes academic success, but also helps build important social skills, relationships and confidence.
Good attendance habits in primary school lead to good attendance habits in high school. This will help expand your child’s options even further as they grow older.
Watch this video to see the benefits of going to school.
It’s ok if you need help
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.

Classes throughout our school will have an explicit focus on our core value of Respect. This will entail all classes unpacking this value and what it means for them.
Why Respect?
At Norwood Primary School we respect ourselves, others, our past, our future and our environment, and we are kind. Respect is a foundational value throughout, not only Norwood Primary but the DoE. It provides us with a common understanding and expectation of how we relate, communicate and treat one another. Through acknowledging others opinions and experiences we can accept and celebrate difference. Respecting each other enables us to develop trust and allows us to work collaboratively. Respect creates a safe and supportive environment so we can continually grow and develop.
What does Respect look like at Norwood Primary School?
- being kind and considerate of others
- being active listeners
- being inclusive and accepting of others
- acknowledging hard work
- being fair with everyone
- valuing others right to learn
By embedding this value in the culture of our school, we model the behaviours we encourage in our learners.
As part of the celebration of our Values, we will be awarding those students who have consistently displayed and modelled the Respect behaviours of our Expected Student Behaviour with a Respect badge, which they can wear every day. These badges will be presented to students in assemblies in late Term 3. For parents/guardians of these students, please keep an eye out for an invitation to be a part of this assembly to recognise those students who go above and beyond.
