Queechy Alliance Middle Years Literacy Project
Instructional Model
Schools within the Queechy Alliance (QA) continue to establish consistent knowledge about the four phases of the Instructional Model: Engage, Explicit Teaching, Targeted Learning and Review. Teachers are implementing elements of the framework in to their classroom practice regularly and they are making adaptions as needed to support student success.
This term, on Monday June 17th, staff from all seven schools met for a Professional Learning session around the Explicit Teaching phase of the Instructional Model (IM). We were fortunate to have Pamela Macklin (our School Improvement consultant) here again to impart her knowledge and wisdom to the group in a collaborative way. It was an opportunity for staff to gain a shared understanding of explicit teaching and the gradual release of responsibility needed by the teacher for students to be successful. The importance of Effective Feedback and Quality Questioning in this phase was also highlighted. Tasks enabled professional conversations with colleagues from other schools and grades, sharing successes, challenges and student and personal development.
Our next session together will be on Monday July 22nd (Student Free day). Led by Karen Hampton (Principal, Norwood Primary School), staff will be engaged in ‘How Students Learn to Read’ before moving to Moderation groups in the afternoon.
