F1 In Schools Challenge
On Thursday 25th November 15 grade 6 students enthusiastically participated in the REA F1 In Schools Challenge at the Australian Maritime College. Students were in teams of 3 and have been working all year with Mr Djakic from Queechy HS and Mr Walker to design and build a balsa wood car to race using a small CO² canister. As the only primary school to participate, we knew that we were competing against each other, but we also compared our times to the high school students.
We were lucky enough to be given a tour of the Maritime College and then got our cars scrutineered and given 20 minutes to do any final changes.
We then got to race our cars 4 times down the track. Twice through manual starting and twice automatically. Our best and worst times were removed and the middle two times added together to find a winner. The fastest car was from “Creative Cars” who were Charlie C, Bella A and Zoe R, whose car travelled down the 20 metre track in just over 1.1 seconds!!
As a part of the competition teams were also marked on their A2 Poster about the process of creating their car and an A3 poster of their CAD drawings.
We had the most amazing time experience and it was great to see 5 grade 7 students participating who were members of our teams last year.
Our cars are in the hallway opposite the staff room for anyone who would like to see them.
